Fault on line 2 was reported to AA, they came back and told me immediately that they could see a battery contact fault. I could have checked for that myself but I didn’t think any more to it other than burned faceplate front or modem cable as seen with line 4. See
https://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,25430.0.html This morning an engineer rang at 8 am; he was at the exchange or out on the moor locating the fault. Speed is already up to 2.9 Mbps, should be 3.1 Mbps and can see that the SNR vs tones curve is still not quite perfect but 93% of the way there. The bit-loading graph shows that it is 2 bits short of what it should be on the best downstream tones, should be 12 bits in places, otherwise 11 bits from tones 40 to 80, but in part of that region it isn’t yet even managing ten.
Anyway, a good job so far. Engineer still out there working on it. Really really nice guy; hellish job having to be up before 8am, ugh. Poor fellow, what a hero.
Erm, not such a good end to the tale: having been working, the line is now down! Notes follow:

The bit about "Final alternate test results: Final FastTest performed from the customer premise." is a
complete lie as he never came to the house, or I would have been able to say, where’s my DSL gone?
Very nice guy though, very friendly, just a bit daft.
