Author Topic: FTTC Line Repaired but No DLM Reset, Upstream Still Impacted - Why?  (Read 3028 times)

(EDIT - subject changed as it seems clearly not a banding issue)
My line would usually run at around 75 down / 17 up.  I had an issue with my line which over the course of a couple of months was intermittently on and off, finally realised I was losing dialtone every so often.  EE arranged for an engineer to visit.

First engineer knocked on door and changed faceplate, removed extension wiring and found nothing (line still intermittent but not broken when he visited), second one went to cabinet straight away without getting in touch, and found a fault in the street cab.

I noticed the resync happen and popped out to see; and sure enough the guy was doing my line so I asked him about it and whether he would reset it - he said he didn't need to as I was getting pretty good speed now (80 down but only 12 up).   It appears the 12 up might have "stuck" due to DLM perhaps?  Or could it be for other reasons?

Is there any chance of my upstream coming back?

I was on a HH6 during the debacle; these were the logs from that coming and going with the fault:

I've since installed a setup using a Vigor 130 and ditched the HH6 (on top of the line fault, it seemed to reset a lot) and the stats last night looked like:

No its not banded, you can clearly see the upstream SNR margin is 6dB so its going as fast as it can.

Its definitely strange though that you can get full downstream speed but a limited upstream.  Both my lines hit the 20Mbit upstream even though neither can achieve full downstream speed any more.

I can only guess you must have some interference somewhere in the upstream frequencies.  Does make me wonder if there is still a fault though?

Thanks @Alex Atkin UK .  The 1st engineer did mention in passing that I was affected by some crosstalk - odd though that the drop in upstream seemed coincident with my line coming and going, and that coming and going at least has now cleared.

Is there any other DLM intervention that could be affecting the upstream only?  Going down the theory of the frequencies; do you know if there is any way to get more information out of the modem about the various frequencies in use and any metrics the modem has for them?

I guess my chances realistically of getting anyone at Openreach to care about my line when the download is so good are close to zero unless it starts getting really fail-y again.

As Alex said, your SNRM is 6dB so its going as fast as it can.  Same theory applies to both upstream and downstream so unlikely to be DLM related.

RE frequency info from the modem -   You can using a HG612 and DSLstats.

You can see frequency graph in dsl stats in vigor, also you can try different modem fw in dsl settings in your vigor to see if that change anything. When I tested different fw on my vigor I see that on some of them modem sync with ridiculous low upstream, downstream was O.K.

The thing that got me wondering about DLM type things was that running "vdsl snr -50" did give me about a 20mbit increase in sync downstream sync (see the stats) but didn't actually seem to affect the SNR reported.  I wondered if the cabinet might have applied the "inverse" at there end to my upstream.  Not very scientific I know, but I didn't understand why the increase in downstream sync.

RE frequency info from the modem -   You can using a HG612 and DSLstats.
OK, don't have one of them.  I think my old original 2013 vintage white box which is still functional is an ECI one.

That sounds interesting.  Note the HH6 also was syncing around this kind of level yet was previously synching higher, which makes me think it is less likely.  I saw there is one alternative firmware on Draytek's site - is that the only alternative?

Do you have any specifics for how to get the chart on the Vigor?  I did try searching quickly and didn't turn up anything for this modem.  Appreciate any pointer in the right direction.
EDIT: Got it, looks like vdsl showbins is the command.
EDIT2:  Looks like it is only the downstream that is reported?  Need to read up on this a bit more...
EDIT3:  OK, vdsl showbins and vdsl showbins up.  Will have to figure out how to chart this.

To change vdsl fw on current fw
Wan->general setup-> wan1-> dsl wan code (should be two to choose)
Also in dsl stats you got tab on the top "tone information"

At the risk of sounding like a total thicky...
My Vigor 130 Modem is on    3.8.4.1 BT bought from NetXL, which appears to be the latest UK firmware.
The options you describe seem totally missing from the webUI - the webUI seems to have very little in it at all.
Are you describing another device, or a different firmware which isn't the BT version?

I'm using vigor 2760 in bridge mode, possibly more options on mine, however you should be able to change modem code, even vigor 130 got two. I also use bt latest fw, but I can choose between 576D17 and 574307 from drop down list. Looking on your stats you use now 576D17, I was using this one as well but find out that 574307 is more stable (snr don't fluctuating so much).

From what I can see (unless I'm being blind) there is no drop down menu or similar on the current firmware for the Vigor 130 (3.8.4.1 BT) to allow choice of a modem code for the xDSL modem.  If you have this menu can you grab a screenshot of it so I can see where it is?

I see on the Draytek website there is a link to an entire firmware image which it appears may have a different modem firmware in it, but that sounds quite different to what you're describing.
https://www.draytek.co.uk/support/downloads/vigor-130/send/257-vigor-130/1806-v130-3841-bt
And:

You mention modem code: 574307
That sounds like a very old modem code, I see it referenced all the way back to 2015?

Not sure how old it is, but is attached in latest fw 3.8.9.4_BT for vigor 2760.
Option for change modem code on screenshot.
While 576D16 is recommended by BT, the 574307 is recommended by Draytek if have issues wit other one.
Also attached example of tone information option on my Draytek.

Thanks, there's nothing like that on the Vigor 130.

Well, interestingly today I noticed the US atainble rate had crept up a smidge; I rebooted the DSL in the Vigor 130 and I got almost exactly a 1mbit / sec upload increase.  We'll see if this is an upward trend back to where I was, or just a blip.  Would love to know what the mechanism is.

So this happened after a modem reboot last night - momentarily immediately after sync the US actual and attainable were both around 14500000, and then the US attainable dropped to 12500000ish with the far SNR at 4dB, though the US actual has stuck for now.
However the line seems to be working OK at 14500000 - fast pings (as fast as they were) and getting the benefit of the extra throughput.
This is now almost 3.5mbit faster upstream than I had dropped down to with no internal changes.
I'm guessing if this is on a knife edge that there is a good chance on a reboot I'll see the rate drop again.
Does anyone know if there is any utility that can automatically or semi-automatically generate the tone graphs from the CLI info on these units?
