VMG1312-B10A Poor Performance on FTTC (ECI Cab. approx. 5km)
« on: August 06, 2020, 04:37:40 PM »

Hi all, after finding this website and getting sort of way more interested than is productive, I took the general consensus and bought a VMG1312-B10A (rom reset and updated to latest johnson fw) and a VMG8324-B10A (johnson fw) as I intend to replace my parents stop gap £10 ECI openreach modem with the 8324 I with their new router.

So I had previously been using a EE smart hub (rebranded bt smart hub) with synced at 64-65mbs, and due to a router upgrade I again went to ebay and bought a cheap eci openreach which sat at around 64mbs sync.

After plugging in the 1312 I've been met with dissapointment, maybe I've been overhyped by this forum but I'm getting 58mbs?! so not only is there no improvement, but its significantly worse than both cheap other options I had. For me it would be easy to just swap back and forget about it, but my parents line currently syncs at 11mb with a 80mb fibre package, so was hoping to get them some improvement as 11mbs is pretty poor these days. My concern is if I plug it in and go home, if they recieve a drop like I have, they'll have an unusable connection. So 2 issues really,

1.why is the vmg1312 performing so poorly on my line?
2. is this likely to occur on my parents line? (actually seeing my mom to install it on her 65th birthday, so wouldn't be ideal if I left her without the ability to watch her crime dramas via streaming..)

That sounds about right compared to my own testing.

ECI modem (Lantiq in the image) on an ECI cabinet DOES sync higher than Broadcom, if the line is stable enough not to trigger DLM action.

Broadcom gains where a line is long or noisy, as its more stable in those cases so you are less likely to get your speed downgraded by DLM.

Was the line interleaved before on the EE Smart Hub? As it’s showing it is with the 1312.

Thanks for sharing alex, pretty meh but I'll have to have a look at other options - not sure about openwrt on a homehub as it'll lose hw nat acceleration? Hows the perfomance?

Now that I think about it it wasn't interleved - i believe that happened when the 8324 came in the post and I plugged it in to run for a few hours to ensure it worked.. Is this something that can recover over time or will I need to beg EE to reset my line?

Just swapped out the 1312 for the ee router - synced at 57 this time, I suspect I've triggered some sort of dlm? uh oh

Also discovered the parents are on a huawei cabinet from using the tools in the side bar, so hopefully they may have a bit of a better experience with the broadcom chipset.

Looking at the options I can only really see the fritz boxes as a lantiq alternative and at that kind of money I dont think its worth it unless you have any suggestions?

Not sure about NAT acceleration on the HH5a, I know there has been a lot of work going on to get some of that functionality in OpenWRT, even though it kinda goes against OpenWRTs goal of having a "one size fits all" OS.  The HH5a is certainly a very box on its own, its why I only use it as a modem not router.  It doesn't have the CPU grunt to even run the WiFi at full speed.

I think Broadcom should work best on Huawei though?

I use vigor 2760 in bridge mode, I'm also on eci cabinet. Never had any issues, very stable on my line.

With your parents 11mbit on a huawei cab on an old ECI openreach box, I'd be surprised if you didnt get at least a few mbits changing to a 1312/8x24 with the nice input filter + broadcom/broadcom chipsets.

On a VDSL line as long as that there could be more to be gained from removing/consolidating any extension wiring that could still be attached, installing a filtered face plate etc. But that might be more than a "pop in and install it" type of job.

The 2 resyncs you will incur plugging in the 8324 - looking at the speed - plugging the old modem back in are very unlikely to cause any DLM unless the line is already having issues. So I would test it and see... and while you are at it have a look for the mentioned extension wiring/poor filters.

Looks like you've triggered Interleaving.

That also means the Zyxel syncs 1Mb higher than the EE Hub.

Thanks all, is interleving permanent or over time will it notice that the line has stabilized?

J0hn thanks for letting me know, if the line recovers to its previous uninterleved state it with a +1mb I'd be happy. I never really had an issue with my sync speed it was more out of necessity of getting a pretty good new router and the ee hub is locked down so no bridge mode. I thought I'd pair it with a decent modem that'll hopefully last until I can get FTTP. Parents place has been a bigger job, they live in an old farmhouse with stone walls so I've got 5 access points going around the place via powerline so they can atleast get access to their measly 11mbs in every room now, the wan speed is the last remaining issue.

is that the actual Johnson who made the firmware? If so, great job and thanks, really appreciated! When they're on 11mbs 1-2mbs extra is actually a noticeable increase and they'd be very happy - to be honest their definition of fast is being able to watch a show on iplayer without it buffering more than once.. interestingly, the bt whosale thing says they should be getting between 16-32mbs, after installing the new modem and letting it settle for a day and running dsl stats (i'll post here), would it be worth to get plusnet to investigate the line?

With regards to input filter, my vdsl filter at my house is built into the socket, whereas at my parents I believe its the generic old big block style plug in that came free with a plusnet modem a number of years ago. I'd intended to replace it with the one that came when I moved to this property from EE 8 months ago (again no use for it myself) and replace the line between the modem and the filter. The one I recieved from EE looks much the same although its roughly half the size. Are there any third party input filters you can recommend that may increase sync speed or is it good to just replace the generic old bigger one with the newer smaller one as this won't make too much difference?

also for info stats are still the same as yesterday, leaving the vmg1312 in permanently now, hopefully after 7 days no resyncs something will happen?

Please tell me I'm taking this all too far, but would buying a CISCO 887 series have the potential to increase the sync speed at my parents? They're not too pricey on ebay and the dslam interoperability stuff is interesting - I assume this wouldn't apply to public dslams? http://www.lyme.com/sw/swchannel/images/ProductCatalog/ProductPage/File/datasheet-c78-733645.pdf

I'd say that you'd be best trying the VMG8324 as a first step and then I'd be looking to see if there are any internal wiring issues that need sorting (eg star wired extensions).

Cheers for the wiring info, I hadn't even thought about it - I know their broadband connects to the mastersocket which is behind a bookshelf and hasn't been updated since they moved over 5 years ago, also probably not for a good while with the previous owners, so I've ordered NTE5c MK2 & VDSL/ADSL Faceplate MK4 - gonna give it a stab on mine (not that I think it'll increase what | have, new build 6 years ago, MK3 fitted, but it'll allow me to iron out the process before attempting theirs!). I've read that the new mastersockets that do the filtering are less impactful on spead than lots of microfilters about the place, so lets hope!
