Revamped line after Openreach engineer visit
« on: March 03, 2020, 12:55:26 PM »

My new ISP Zen agreed to send an OR engineer to check why my line didn't reach the expected speed (according to their remote tests my line was able to sync at 70-71 Mbs, while the actual speed was 63.8 Mbs).

Long story short, the engineer after a couple of hours, said that he had to replace the old socket with a NTE5C and he advised me to disconnect the wires that were bringing the phone line to my bedroom (and I said yes) in order to have only the wires going to my living room.

At the end, you can see in the 'line_new' picture, I gained a few Mb and I also see less CRC and ES, so happy days.

Now, the engineer will report back that there was nothing wrong with the 'external' line, then Zen will want to charge me: fine by me, but I wanted the opinion of the expert users in this forum to understand (the two pictures shows my line status before and after the engineer visit) whether the problem was really just the fact the I had wires also in the bedroom and by disconnecting them the engineer fixed the line ??

Or there is something else, and in case I can dissent from the charge...

This is absolutely correct, I have similar situation in my house. Like three extensions connected to master socket. After I disconnected all and fit dsl plate (same as yours), I connected only one pair unfiltered which going to my modem and one pair filtered to my phone socket. Since then my line became damn stable and speed jumped like 10Mb plus. No more hundreds thousands of FECs, thousands of CRC etc. I don't even need to check stats now on my line.

Hi

Quite possible the extra wires were causing an issue plus dependant on how they were wired into the master socket.  If they changed the master socket though that is BT's remit so I suspect the engineer will mark it down as a faulty master socket to save you being charged, in reality it was probably just the extra wiring.

This is basically what happened when I disconnected the bell wire from a friends extensions.

A quick update: finally I have a fastpath line, good stuff, my ECI line seems performing very well, so fingers crossed it will stay stable  :fingers:

Out of curiosity, I had a resync probably yesterday when the line moved to fastpath, and the attainable changed from 85Mbs to 78Mbs, is it a normal behaviour ?

When you are on an interleaved connection the max attainable figure gets calculated wrongly and is always way too high on any modem I have experienced.  So yes it is normal.  If you are on fast path the max attainable is usually a good indication.

I have 84Mb on interleave, on fastpath 77-78Mb, so yours seems to be right.

Yes, when interleaved, attainable is around 8-9mb higher. I was seeing 106k when interleaved, now around 97/98k
