TalkTalk Future Fibre Trial (Openreach FTTP)
« on: March 09, 2020, 09:12:26 AM »

For those of you with Openreach fibre already installed, TalkTalk are offering free 100/15 Mbps FTTP on a trial basis. However the caveat is that you must already be a TalkTalk broadband customer, either on ADSL2+ or FTTC. Otherwise they're expecting to officially release their Openreach based FTTP services to the public around May/June 2020, with speeds of up to 330/50 Mbps.

To request to go on their trial, call them on 0345 172 0074 which connects you directly to their FTTP trial team (UK based).

Kinda mental they're launching 330/50 just as Gigabit becomes available for residential.

Not mental at all considering around 80% of punters on Openreach FTTP only lines take out 80/20 or less, so those who take out the half gig & 1 Gig (where available) would be a very very small %. I’m sure the likes of TalkTalk will be selling 1 Gig on OR FTTP for £9.99/m one day, but that one day is 5+ years IMHO. At present 330/50 is more than enough for your average residential customer.

Thanks for sharing.

Although, I know what they mean...  I had a bit of a giggle at this which to the average punter may seem like a contradiction.

The cabling we use for Future Fibre is very delicate compared to standard broadband,  so we'll send a specially trained engineer to install it for you.

Most broadband packages available today use copper wiring to some extent. Copper is less reliable than fibre because it's more easily damaged,

What's the maximum potential speed of FTTP? Presumably it scales indefinitely, will an upgrade ever be needed again?

At some point I imagine so but it's good for the foreseeable.

With current technology that fibre is good for 40 Gbit. Optical transceivers will continue to improve so 100 Gbit symmetrical is doable over a single fibre.

Loads of bandwidth left to be used in the fibre.

Anywhere with Openreach FTTP. TalkTalk have unbundled all the headend exchanges I believe.

There are no specific locations.

Everywhere Talktalk sell FTTC they have unbundled the exchange.

You just need to have FTTP from OpenReach already installed.

Give it a few months or more and we may be able to order around, which will be nice, I seem to get the odd glitch on Virgin every now and again, so I shall certainly be looking at options when it's live.
