UniFi AP-AC-Pro and firmware 4.0.80.10875
« on: February 20, 2020, 10:11:59 PM »

The latest firmware 4.0.80.10875 for my UniFi AP-AC-Pros has bricked one, potentially bricked another, and bricked a new one. The bricking appears to break the ethernet port, which becomes inaccessible, including after a reset, power cycle and attempted TFTP session.

What happened.

I bought a new AP.
Started the UniFi controller, which reported my APs as needing updating.
Updated them, seemingly OK.

Connected the new AP to the network, needed updating from something really old.
New AP then showed as Disconnected / Needs updating, and try as I might it didn't work.
Returned to supplier for refund.

Turned off my existing AP here to move it. On powering it up, the same symptom - disconnected, unpingable. WiFi side still working, but clients cannot get a DHCP address. I will try TFTP again, with little hope.

I have disabled automatic firmware upgrades in the UniFi controller, and reverted my remote AP to 4.0.66.10832 so it should still work after being powered off.

Meanwhile, bought some BT White Disks as I really need my WiFi network!

Hmm . . . That is not good.  :(

I wonder how much QA testing was given to that particular firmware image.

Fortunately I didn't have that issue on the nanoHD but I have noticed since updating to 4.0.80.10875 that I'm having reliability issues with the WiFi which is depressing after I'd been so impressed at how well the nanoHD performed compared to any other device I've owned.

Since updating I regularly have to disconnect and reconnect my Galaxy S10 and I had to reboot a day or two ago as it refused to connect at all.

There is an interesting long thread on this release at https://community.ui.com/releases/UAP-USW-Firmware-4-0-80-10875/ca8596b9-32de-483a-b698-0ed4677f424c
It does not mention my problem, but some interesting points are made. Like if it works for you, why upgrade?
Provided your AP is still working and has internet access reverting to a different firmware release is easy.

That’s horrible.  It maintains two o/s images, one latest one previous ? Did you manage to revert ?

To me it looks as if the NIC has died.
After the latest round of cable changing it does not even appear to be powered (8-(
Meanwhile, a 3 disk BT Whole Home set has arrived, been set up, and seems to be working fine.

After many hours of fiddling, head banging and messaging,
Ubiquiti Support will accept a RMA.
Amazon have arranged it, with an advanced return refund and a Royal Mail return label.

I suspect that something went amiss with the firmware upgrade, but did not bite until the AP was power cycled.
I could not get TFTP resets to work, most times not even transferring.
I could get ssh to work, but not scp as /usr/libexec/sftp-server had vanished.
Firmware version on the AP (/etc/version) still 4.0.80...

These Enterprise access points and comprehensive PC controller are fine when they work, but this has been a nightmare.
I'll see if I can switch my remote site to using the simple Android controller.

It took around half an hour to set up my replacement BT Whole Home 3 disk pack.

So far the only downside is that the number of 5G channels is restricted and I can see a channel clash with a neighbour.
But, the many bricks in between should mean than interference is low.

I have a clash with a neighbour who is a very weak signal and sometimes my speed drops from 700Mbit to 400Mbit. (actual performance not link speed)

That said I'm using 160Mhz channel width so its far more susceptible to it.   WiFi 6e can't come soon enough IMO.

Coo. I cannot see myself rushing out to replace any of my WiFi gear and clients with 802.11ax capable kit.

But I do see the attractions, as from the look of it do Ofcom.
