TV 5GHz WiFi Connection
« on: February 11, 2020, 11:26:25 AM »

I have an Asus DSL-N55U which my TV is currently connected to and a VMG-8924-B10A as a wireless access point connected the the Asus with a gigabit switch.

If I connect my TV wifi to the Asus iPlayer is fine and streams well. If I connect to the 8924 wifi 5ghz the TV is slow to respond and iplayer gives a "Network error" when trying to stream.

My Laptop and another PC are connected also to the 8924 5ghz and can both stream iplayer and browse the web.

Why does my TV not like the 8924 wifi?

Could it be the 5ghz signal where the TV is? My smart TV has a check connection option so if yours does what sort of speed does it show on 5ghz?

It's a Panasonic 50CS520 and the only check connection it has is to test that the internet is available with an animation which it passes on both although somewhat slowly on the check to gateway on the 8924 signal.

Just checking my available networks on the TV and a new one has sprung up, DIRECT-URSTUDIO10X64mlj. It is on 2.4ghz and my wifi password doesn't work on it. I have plex server on PC Studio10x64 and on the PC wifi hotspot is off and when I turn it on it has a different ID. Anyone know what this DIRECT network could be? It doesn't appear on my other PC or Laptop just the TV.

That looks like a WiFi Direct network, created by a URSSTUDIO device - looks like a manufacturer of smart boards/Miracast receivers.

It’ll only show up on devices whose WiFi support the WiFi Direct protocol.

Thanks, this would be my main PC which I had no clue was sending out this network.

Further investigation into miracast, I have just connected to my Viera downstairs and projected my main PC to it from upstairs. Also found a Samsung TV but dont know who that belongs too.

Some of these "smart" devices are remarkably dumb.

I noticed my Chromecast if it loses WiFi will go back into pairing mode where ANYONE could claim it as their own, as there is literally no other way configure it if its not connected to WiFi.  It could be really annoying if your neighbours wanted to prank you.

I wonder sometimes if they only test these devices in big houses in the US with metal insulation where WiFi doesn't spill out of the house.  In the real world, having a button to put them into pairing mode makes way more sense, but I guess for anyone who has it behind the TV it would be too annoying.

You are correct Alex, although my Viera gave me the option to connect on the TV I was tempted to send my screen to the neighbours and give them a fright.
