BT / 2WIRE 2701HGV-C
« on: February 10, 2020, 07:08:05 PM »

I have a long line ADSL & was looking for a router that would cope. I fair amount of reading turned up the Billion 8800NL and the 2WIRE 2700. I saw a cheap 2700 on eBay and bought it, when it arrived it turned out to be a 2701. The seller tried to fob me off by saying it's the same thing as a 2700, but after all the reading I did, it's clear that they're quite different.
However, I thought that as I had it at home, I'd give it a try. To be honest, after a couple of days it seems to handle the line quite well with good speeds and so far no line drops. The only thing that bothers me is that it has an open port on the Internet side for remote management. On the 2701, there's no option to turn it off, other versions apparently have a tick box in the advanced firewall settings to enable / disable remote management.
I found the hidden page to change the ISP on here (many thanks), and all is ok with Plusnet.
Does anyone know of a way to turn off the remote management, or any other hidden pages?

This is the 2WIRE 2701HGV-W manual pdf and on page 90 you can find the option to disable it, hope it would be the same for your -C one. (sorry I forgot to post the link )

https://setuprouter.com/router/2wire/2701hgv-w/manual-1317.pdf

As you mentioned your line is a long ADSL one then any router that uses Broadcom chipset would get the most out of it like Zyxel, Billon, and 2WIRE (if it uses Broadcom as well).

Thanks for the quick reply, unfortunately that manual covers a different firmware version. Seems there are several variants of the 2701HGV. The -C version is BT firmware.

I think I threw out my 2700 as its so old I figured nobody would want it as there are hundreds of newer routers out there that are far more capable now.

It's true that these routers are quite old, but from reading around, they seem to be a good option for long lines. I think they were made when the ADSL technology was a bit less reliable than today, so they were a little over engineered for today's needs.
I'm wondering if it's possible to tweak the HTML code on the firewall page to set a different variable so that I can turn off the remote management. If anyone has a 2700 or 2701 with the option to turn off the management, it would be interesting to know what what the web page is & maybe see the HTML code.
