Suddenyly have extremely slow speeds with BT
« on: July 09, 2008, 03:47:52 PM »

Hey guys,

I've noticed that recently we've been getting crazy slow speeds from our BT broadband. We're on option 3, live close to our exchange and have previously had the full 8/7mb download speeds. But over the past few weeks we've been getting just left than half a meg download speeds, even though the home hub still shows 7,100+ connection. This is both on and off peak. Nothing has changed with our wiring or anything around that area that we can think of, so we're stumped! And suddenly, as of the last day it's dropped to 0.1 of a meg!

So any ideas you might have would be a big help!

Cheers!

Here's the line stats:

Can you perform a BTw performance test and get the details of your IPprofile please.

Be warned that the performance tester gets very busy at certain times of the day, and often fails in the evenings.

The other thing is there a possibility that you have exceeded your FUP?
BT dont advise you if you have and the first most users are aware is when their speeds take a dive.
The info isnt even available to their normal CS reps and theres a special no to call.
I think the phone no to find out is 0800 7076044

Hey kitz, thanks for the reply.

Here's the info from the bt speed test:
---------
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    Your DSL connection rate: 7616 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 135 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 101 kbps

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.

If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.

Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.
----------

After reading a little abount the FUP on other forums, it seems they tend to throttle people to around 500kpbs, which is what we -were- getting, so this could be the problem as I have had a habbit of forgetting about download speeds during peak times. However this was both on and off peak? Same speed at 10pm as 2am etc.. is this normal as on the bt site it says "We will not impose any restrictions outside of peak times."
If so, any idea how long this would last? And any ideas about the even slower speed of 135kbps?

Thanks for your time!

You've got an extremely low IP profile, so you must have had some low speed reconnections recently. So the problem isn't related to a FUP.  If your router is one of the models supported by Routerstats then you could run that for a period to see what happens to the noise margin and connection speed. Apart from that, these pages might give you some ideas as to the source of the problem.
