Zone Alarm and latest windows update KB 951748
« on: July 09, 2008, 03:10:37 PM »

I installed the latest Windows XP updates today and was unable to connect to the internet afterwards.  My firewall is Zone Alarms v7 and it was blocking all attempts to connect.  Quick check on the internet via another computer showed that  I was not alone.  The offending update was KB 951748 uninstalling this enabled internet connection to be established.  This is a recognised problem and Zone Alarm are said to be working on it.

Unfortunately KB 951748 seems to be an important update as it addresses DNS security problems.

That's pretty quick... how long would it have taken Microsoft to sort it?

There are several other firewalls available for people to change to but owners would not change from Windows to  X Y or Z operating system because of a software conflict. So ZoneAlarm had to react very fast.

Okay have installed updated version (was an update behind anyway), and have just noticed in top left hand corner of IE, Zone Alarm Spy Blocker, I have Superantispyware running, which one should I turn off 'cos I know I cann't have two running at the same time, although they haven't come to blows yet.

This is an update to the recently announced Internet connectivity problems being experienced by some customers following the application of a Microsoft hotfix via Windows update.

Customers who have the security software 'ZoneAlarm' installed may have recently found that they are unable to connect to the Internet.

The vendors of ZoneAlarm have now released a security advisory containing a fix to this problem. This advisory can be seen here:-
http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/pressReleases/2008/LossOfInternetAccessIssue.html

The following suggestions are contained within the advisory.

1.) Download and install the latest versions which solve the loss of internet access problem here:

ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite - http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/1043_zl/zaSuiteSetup_70_483_000_en.exe
ZoneAlarm Pro - http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/1043_zl/zapSetup_70_483_000_en.exe
ZoneAlarm Antivirus - http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/pressReleases/2008/LossOfInternetAccessIssue.html
ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware - http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/1043_zl/zaasSetup_70_483_000_en.exe
ZoneAlarm Basic Firewall - http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/1025_zl/zlsSetup_70_483_000_en.exe

or:

2.) Move the Internet Zone slider to Medium.

i. Navigate to the "ZoneAlarm Firewall" panel.
ii. Click on the "Firewall" tab.
iii. Move the "Internet Zone" slider to medium.

or:

3.) Uninstall the hotfix (not recommended).

i. Click the "Start Menu".
ii. Click "Control Panel", or click "Settings" then "Control Panel".
iii. Click on "Add or Remove Programs".
iv. On the top of the add/remove programs dialog box, you should see a checkbox that says "show updates". Select this checkbox.
v. Scroll down until you see "Security update for Windows (KB951748)".
vi. Click "Remove" to uninstall the hotfix.
