Bricked VMG3925-B10B
« on: January 30, 2020, 05:48:45 PM »

As a test I swapped my Asus DSL-N55U in router mode for the VMG3925-B10B in router mode. After a day I found that the 5ghz was unstable on the VMG3925, so off I google and come across a ZyXel forum thread saying it was a problem with the latest firmwares and to downgrade to 3 c0 from 13 c0.

So I uploaded 3 c0 to the 3925 and now it is bricked. Cant access the webpage by ethernet cable or 2.4 or 5 ghz connections. It appears to logon to the wireless but just cant get access to 192.168.1.1. Tried loads of browsers even Internet Exploder and multiple factory resets but no go.

Any ideas?

I would perform the following --
  • Disconnect the VMG3925-B10B from everything.
  • With your favourite opened out paper-clip, press, and keep pressed, the recessed reset button.
  • With your other hand, connect the PSU and allow the device to power up, keeping the reset button operated.
  • Wait as long as you are able or until the Power LED shows solid red (not flashing red).
  • Release the reset button.
  • Wait five minutes.
  • Power off the device.
  • After a minute, power on the device and attempt to access it as normal.

No go. Powered on with reset button pressed for what felt like ages and the flashing green power button went solid red 3 times then just returned to flashing green. Still cant access the web page.

So onto Plan B --
  • Open up the device and check the PCB for a set of (possible) serial console header pins.
  • Analyse to determine which is the Tx, Rx & Gnd pins.
  • Connect an appropriate adaptor to a computer and invoke a command line terminal.
  • Power on the VMG3925-B10B and promptly interrupt the boot sequence.
  • If you now have the Broadcom common firmware environment prompt (CFE> ), issue a "help" request. (athe)
  • Consider the options.
Then . . . ?

Unfortunately I dont have an adapter nor would I want to open the case. I will just use my substitute Asus DSL-N55U router that has never been out of the box and is nice and clean. I wonder if Iam_TJ still hangs around these boards and would like two bricked ZyXel routers/modems to play with or anyone else.
