Gaming only uses about 256Kb packets transmitted over adsl/fibre/Virgin etc, and servers normally take into account any variations in distance via ping etc, therefore creating a level playing field for all.
I would look at how your PC/ Console is setup, Pc's have lots of background tasks running, as my God son found out when he started lagging during Fortnite. He now games lag free after some detective work on his PC.
Others may have more insights if you are using a console.
