ZyXEL VMG8924-B10A Firmware
« on: January 28, 2020, 12:23:47 PM »

Hello everyone. Got my hands on an unopened 8924 B10a  - completely new so to speak.
Bit confused over firmwares and things so could someone give me an idea on what firmware i should look to upgrading it with? It’s for a standard 80/20 infinity type internet service but not with BT. Have a router setup for the other end of it just need to get this modem side sorted out nicely :)

Thanks chaps.

is this anything to be concerned about? it mentions its Zyxell VPN but says 100,000 devices including access points are affected?
im still running on same firmware for about 2 years now .28 official - I use ExpressVPN to keep my information private, but this does not help keep hackers away from my PC does it? just been on the news a backdoor in Windows was used to infect 20,000 businesses

I've read a little about the user 'johnsons' firmware having newer modem code in it, might fix the 10Mb difference that I lost as it says I can (and used to) get 74-79Mb (fastpath off/on respectively) but after 4 hours down-time one night from midnight (dropped) to 4am (revived with 10Mb loss)- since then i dropped to 64Mb (fastpath off) and been there since, even fastpath wont come on with 0-2 errored seconds per hour? though it was 3 and under it would turn on?

 - is it easy to install and use? or am I wasting my time?

should I look for another router?

are there any newer Broadcom chipset routers? or has Lantiq improved?

any advice is greatly appreciated

thanks

It doesn't appear to affect the VMG series routers.

The newer modem code has no effect on sync speed.
It only provided benefit to a unique Vectoring bug but it isn't even recommended for that any more, with a much older MCT approved version performing much better on Vectoring lines.

In my experience you can need single figure ES in a 24 hours period for Interleaving to remove.
A line needs to be way way below the MTBE green figures shown on the kitz DLM page.
A manual cap of the sync speed is often needed to get back to fastpath.

In my opinion no.
I've not come across anything more stable than the BCM63168 and the additional noise filter in the Zyxel.

The BCM63138 is newer but provided no benefit on my line.

Lantiq is now Intel.

Check the recent Draytek Vigor 166 thread to see how shockingly bad the newer Intel chipsets perform on VDSL2.

I use a couple of VMG8924 as modems and like others on here I use the 'johnson' firmware which is discussed in the thread linked earlier or found here.

All I can say is that as modems they have been incredibly stable and reliable for me, good luck!

I use Johnson’s firmware in my four ZyXEL VMG 1312-B10A modems. Rock solid, never a single problem with any of them and the internal easy stats webserver is a godsend for me, use that feature all the time.

Thank you to Mr Johnson once again for all the hard work done for me!  ;D

If you have vectoring, then siofjofj's variant on Johnson's work is the one to go for - full 80/20 connection with vectoring and not a single drop for about a month now.  siofjofj added slightly newer modem code for vectoring support..  https://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,25176.0.html

It's actually a considerably older version of the modem code that was approved by OpenReach years ago.
