I've just got an ECI modem and I did connect it to my laptop through LAN 1 (LAN 2 has a lid) but I can't log in as it connects always as 'public network' and not as 'private network': can someone please explain what I'm doing wrong?

Ahhh so it's a plug and play modem, gotcha    So I connect the modem to my router and 'off you go'... And not even the possibility to see at what speed the modem is connected ?

I don't mind not having stats, BUT I'd want to know the connection speed    Please tell me there is a way to check the link rate from the router

No chance unless you flash on it chaos calmer fw or openwrt.

It "might" update on the BT line checker though, but it seems pretty random if/when it decides to do so.

Is not that difficult, once pin header is soldered(don't need to be drilled as some people say in different thread) to pcb you just need usb uart adapter and rest is available to download.

I'm pretty useless when it comes to hands-on stuff... 

1) Do you know if there is a guide for dummies with pictures, by any chance ?

2) Is there anyone with an unlocked ECI modem who wants to sell it ?

There is guide in pinned thread in this section, you need a pin header to solder to pcb and no you don't need to drill holes, if you clean them from solder good enough to push through pin header you then just solder pin header from the other side of pcb. USB uart can be bought on ebay for as little as 3-5 pounds, then you just need software from pinned thread, connect uart to pcb, follow instructions, 5min and job done  . Open eci modem and see if you can do it, is not that bad. If you will have issues on the way I can assist. If you decide that you can't do this, I could do for you but my spare time for such activities is limited to weekends only as kids  and full time job keep me busy during the week. Don't really want you to end up without a modem for week or so.

It's possible to do it without any soldering, it's a bit fiddly, but you just need to devise some way to temporarily fix some wires in place using blutack or something similar. I've acquired a BT HomeHub 5A to have a go at, that looks a lot more challenging because the contact points are much smaller, but someone has produced a nice guide for how to do that without any soldering.

It's possible to do it without any soldering, it's a bit fiddly, but you just need to devise some way to temporarily fix some wires in place using blutack or something similar. I've acquired a BT HomeHub 5A to have a go at, that looks a lot more challenging because the contact points are much smaller, but someone has produced a nice guide for how to do that without any soldering.

I wouldn't advise Blutac, better to use proper electrical tape as it shouldn't leave any residue that could be conductive on the board.

I've done two HomeHub 5As myself (one soldered, can't remember if I just used tape for the other or not), but not the ECI as I was under the impression the binary modem driver is not included in OpenWRT.

Oh and I SUCK at soldering due to circulation and arthritis in my hands.  The ECI sounds really easy in comparison.
