Nostalgic old films, ‘Look at Life’.
« on: January 21, 2020, 10:02:10 PM »

Just thought I’d mention... Last week whilst idly browsing the web for some now forgotten topic, following link after link in and out of Wikipedia pages, I stumbled upon the existence of some old short documentaries, originally shown as fillers in 1960s cinemas.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Look_at_Life_(film_series)

Better still, you can buy some of them on DVD.  I couldn’t resist, before the day was out I’d ordered Volume 1 “Transport”, set of 4 DVDs.  Settling down right now, enjoying scenes of now familiar motorways and bridges being built, a great new machine called a hovercraft, and much more.

Beautifully narrated by classic voices including Raymond Baxter and others, pretty good picture quality, and wonderful traffic scenes of 1960s vehicles and contemporary railway stock.

Ah, yes. I have memories of those short films, shown in the cinema c.a. late 1950s - early 1960s.  :)

Interestingly, I have no recollection.   I wonder if a difference in ages of a few critical years make a difference.

I have already been given purchase approval for Volume 3 ‘Science’.    By the time I reach checkout I would not be surprised if Volume 5 ‘Cultural History’ had also dropped, accidentally, into my shopping basket. ::)

In those days some cinemas had 1000 seats and showed two films in an evening programme.
