Allow ping on a FritzBox 7530?
« on: June 24, 2021, 09:59:26 AM »

Morning fine folks,

I've been using the Zen-supplied FritzBox 7530 whilst I upgrade my pfsense box to actually be fast enough for a 900/110 connection. Have to say I'm more impressed with it than I was expecting to be for a ISP-provided box.

A question though - I want to be able accept ping from WAN- ideally from a handful of IPs, but that's secondary. I just appear not to be able to ping my box at all. There's an option called 'stealth mode' which says it'll block WAN ICMP messages, but this is already disabled.

Am I doing something dumb, or missing an extra step?

Thanks!

That's all good @parkdale, I can ping internally fine :)

It's more that I want to be able to ping my WAN external IP and get replies, but there's nada atm:

You may be interested in this discussion https://uk.telecom.broadband.narkive.com/sTWjMSqo/fritz-box-7530-inconsistent-behavior

Thanks, appreciate your google-fu, not sure how I missed that when I originally looked at this!

Quote
This from Zen, who supplied the Fritz!Box 7530:

Firewall stealth mode should be off to allow pings from the internet.

Also: "One thing to note about the Fritz is that it only allows 1 ping
request at any one time and this is the default for all the Fritzbox
firmwares."

This appears to be the exact issue that I was seeing, I believe.. Ugh  ???

Really appreciate your time parkdale :)

I understand rate limiting ping but that's a bit extreme.

It is fairly extreme.. I understand you don't want be flooded with ICMP traffic, but wow. I also didn't realise BQM pinged quite as regularly as it did, so it seems I just had no chance to ever get my attempts through :-X

I have a NAS box with a ipv6 address which I use with the BQM because of this limitation
