Having used DSL stats on Windows, having some spare hardware I setup a Ubuntu box. I've installed the latest "Beta" which in every way works fine, except I cant get the alert mails to work. I've used both SMTP servers I have, but the event log shows a failed connection, in each case.

I'm not that well up anymore on Linux, but was able to manipulate the firewall to allow the web server to work, but I don't think this is a firewall issue.

I suspect a very obvious answer !

I would install Telnet client (apt-get telnet or similar) and test smtp connection with telnet

telnet nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn 25 or replace nnn with FQDN

It connects or would seem to but the authorisation fails. Some weird Linux entry needed in some file. Research doesn’t bring up anything  simple

That sounds like TLS so thinking the mail server does not allow plain

It should though, show a welcome message eg 220 mailswrver ready or similar

If you see that then there is no issue with firewalls or anything blocking the outgoing/incoming connection and if tested using FQDN, no dns issue

I've checked this on my Debian system now. The DSLstats configuration is unchanged compared to when I last used the alert system several months ago. At that time the emails worked; now they don't. I can't explain this.

Having slept on it, I now have the solution (I believe). On your Ubuntu system install the package libssl-dev:

sudo apt-get install libssl-dev
Then shut down DSLstats and restart it. After this you should be able to send email alerts using StartTLS, although GMail is still a problem because of their own security checking.

Just wanted to say I was confused as to why my DSL e-mail alerts were not working on my Linux box, despite all credentials being correct, and this solution fixed it.
