Dear Santa, an Oscilloscope?
« on: January 05, 2020, 09:37:23 PM »

If anybody is interested, one of the things on my letter to Santa last month was...

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B076HD5862

... an oscilloscope in kit form, ~£25.

I think mine actually came from a different seller, but same device.   It is of course little more than a toy, with 200kHz bandwidth.   And I’d not pin my hopes on its accuracy.   But still a nice little gadget, that will actually get used in a certain project I have lined up.

Construction was more challenging than expected owing to tinier components and ageing eyesight.  Also resistors have colour codes that baffle me these days, having learned electronics in the days when resistors had just three coloured bands plus gold/silver for tolerance.   But thankfully it all went together and does seem to work. :)

That looks useful, I still have two old Tektronic professional ones. (not that they get much use nowadays :( )
I built my first DIY one about 45 years ago  :o it used a Ex Government 4" dia radar CRT and had valves, even constructed the Aluminum case for it. (If I remember that was about the size of a large microwave nowadays).

I’m duly impressed, Mike. :)

As a teenager I daresay I fantasised about building one from surplus parts, but altogether too big a project.   And I seem to recall drooling over oscilloscopes in Heathkit catalogues, trying to work out how many weeks/months/years pocket money I’d need to save, the answer was never remotely viable. :D
