2025 ADSL
« on: January 04, 2020, 12:23:16 AM »

In this thread https://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,24177.msg407050.html#msg407050 it was mentioned that "in 2025 there will be no more ADSL". What is this?

2025 is Openreach’s target date for decommissioning the PTSN and moving everyone to Digital Voice

That’s not quite the same as no more ADSL though...

No. Only that one sentence is nonsense.

VoIP over ADSL though.  :'(

It seems hugely wasteful too if they keep the same band plans, basically blanking out voice frequencies which would no longer be in use.

I have BT's Digital Voice service (VOIP), which I was forced to take out when i got a BT Business FTTP line activated recently. BT Business no longer offer voice over copper in FTTP ready properties where a copper line already exists.

Few issues i've noticed with BT's VOIP service:

1) Despite being issued a brand new number by BT themselves, its NOT recognized on the Wholesale checker - its now ~ 3 months since it was issued.

2) There's no way to port another VOIP number - even if it was originally issued by BT on their copper service - back to BT on their new platform.

3) Whilst you can use BT's VOIP handset with any third party router, BT do NOT give you the voip login credentials so that you can use your own VOIP hardware.

Its because of 2) and 3) that i'm still keeping (and using) my other VOIP line on yay.com.

How will BT’s VoIP service work then if you have DSL with wholesale carrier <x> ?

It won't. BT wont be providing VoIP. Where MPF is used it's unaffected, where SMPF is used that'd be Single Order Transitional Access Product (SOTAP) - VoIP over ADSL.

Note: even where there's no broadband service in use voice will be delivered over ADSL. The Openreach WLR / Wholesale Line Rental product is going away.
