ZyXel VMG1312-B10A Log File Not Populating
« on: December 26, 2019, 01:54:55 PM »

I have a ZyXel VMG1312-B10A connected in bridge mode to a Negear Orbi router.

There is nothing populating in the log file.

Not sure whether this is because this is beacuse the VMG1312-B10A idoesn't log in bridge mode or I don't have something correctly configured in the Maintenance - Log Setting screen.

I've attached a screen shot of the current settings, so if anybody can spot what I am doing wrong please let me know.

No doubt I have done something daft, but I can't spot it!

Those settings look correct. What are you expecting to see logged?

As a test, temporarily enable all the options under the "System Log" and the "Security Log" headings. Then go to the "System Monitor" >>> "Log" page. For both the "System Log" and the "Security Log" tabs, set the "Level" to "Debugging" and the "Category" to "All".

I'm not entirely sure what I would expect to see in bridge mode, however I did expect to see something in there.

I've enabled all the options under 'system log' & 'security log'.

The log page settings were already on 'debugging' and 'all'.

Right, understood. So you now need some event to occur that will be logged by the VMG1312-B10A. I can't think of any . . .

For example if you were to tell me your current IPv4 address, I could perform an nmap scan on the address. However I would expect the scan to be noticed by your router and not the modem.

Thanks for the offer.

By setting everything, I am starting to get things appaeraing in the log file.  Most notably DSLStats login events when the Security Log - Account option is set to yes.

So it looks as though there was nothing either fundamentally broken or to worry about.

That's good to know.  :)

With my VMG1312-B10A, I have the two tabs configured with the "Level" set as "Informational" and the "Category" set as "All".

Thanks burakkucat.

Having enabled all, the only hits were against 'Account' on the Security tab and against 'IGMP' and 'uPnP' on the 'System Log' tab.

The Account hits were DSLStats and the IGMP is almost certainly the TBB BQM monitor, which makes sense.  Not sure about the uPnP hits.

Do you have all options set  and then just set the level to 'Informational'?

In the interests of knowledge improvement, I'll PM you my external IP address so you can try a nmap scan. Let me know when you do it and I'll let you know where it's picked up.

I have my VMG1312-B10A is configured as an "all-in-one" box. I rigorously disable all services/features for which I have no need . . . and uPnP is almost top of my list.

In terms of the system and security logs, I have everything enabled except for "Account" (under the "Security Log" heading).

For "System Monitor" >> "Log" (both tabs), I have the "Level" and the "Category" set to "Informational" and "All" respectively. (The "Debugging" level is verbose and is only relevant when . . . er, debugging!)

I have just started an nmap scan as "nmap -sV -sU -sV -O -Pn <IP address>" at 1835 hours . . . and I expect it to run for quite a while (due to my usage of the -sU flag & option).

I just checked mine, it is logging fine.

Security log showing dslstats sessions, and the normal log has a mixture of notices and debug messages.

Thanks, Chrysalis.

Ditto.  Mine is now creating a mix of IGMP debug and uPnP warning messages on teh normal system log and account messages related to DSLStats now that everything is enabled.

I have just disabled uPnP, which should stop further warning messages from that source.
