Sleepy - UPS replacements and upgrades
« on: December 21, 2019, 04:05:00 AM »

Can’t stay awake. I’ve been asleep all day today, and the day before and so on and so on. I h had some breakfast and an afternoon meal but apart from that, I just passed out.

I am trying to get a new UPS plumbed in - got a cheap one from amazon in the recent pre-Black Friday sales. But I just can’t stay awake long enough to guide my beloved through it. I’ve made a list of which kit is to go onto which UPS. The older APC UPS which is currently running works, sort-of but the battery is probably pretty sad: it would probably help you survive a brownout or short outage and will protect from surges so it is very valuable, so the Raspberry Pi is going to life on that.

The list of kit is as follows :

The ‘critical’ list, to go onto the new UPS is
    - Four ZyXEL VMG 1312-B10A modems
    - A ZyXEL 8-port VLAN switch for MUXing/DeMUXing the above modems
    - A Firebrick FB2900 router
    - A larger main switch - HP 24 port
    - PoE injectors times 2 for WAPs - these have been mislaid / misfiled - need to be re-found or else buy replacements

The non-critical list, to be put onto the older APC UPS
    - Raspberry Pi miniature server

Why not replace the battery on the old UPS?

I don’t know, but I’m assuming that the APC 500CS or whatever it is would have a replacement battery that is too expensive.

I already have a new UPS anyway which I’m hoping has a longer runtime.

The huge problem that I have had had whilst UPS shopping is that they quote VA but not Ah (recte C = Coulombs surely). I don’t care about how much kit I can run off it as it’s all very low power kit; all I care about is runtime

@jelv Jelv - that’s a superb tip - I had no idea replacements were available cheaply! What a bargain. Ordered.

So now I will indeed continue using the old APC UPS but with the  other items of kit such as the Raspberry Pi
