Graphics card compatibility
« on: January 16, 2020, 10:15:40 AM »

I'm about to embark on a new pc build, combining new stuff with things I'm going to cannibalise from my current pc. The new motherboard is a ASRock 970M Pro3 (socket AM3+) which will have the Phenom ii x6 1100T cpu that's in my current pc nailed to it. Now I know that this is a fairly dated m/b but I'm hoping that I'll be able to glue a 4k capable graphics card to it. The specs of my new chassis say that I'll have clearance of 31cm by 16cm to fit a card in. I've been looking at various Radeon RX570/580 cards but while I've self-built my current pc with a rudimentary HD6450 blu-tacked into in it and it works, I've got no idea if a GDDR5 card will work with the set-up i'm proposing. Is anyone able to weigh in with some advice please?

it will function, might be bottlenecked but it will work.

Yes it should be fine, but you will get CPU limited on some games. It really depends on what games you are playing.

There are plenty of videos out there where they test this very thing - maybe not on a Phenom?

Apparently someone did.

Again, all depends what you really intend to do with it.

Not sure the nails, glue and blue tack will work, I'd recommend using double sided tape  ;)

Are you planning on gaming at 4K? If so you may find as Chrysalis says the gpu is bottle necked by the CPU

Ok, thanks to everyone that took the time to look and reply.  :)

I've taken the plunge and bought an ASUS RX580 4gb card, although I think I'll use my HD6450 when it comes to installing W10 on the new build. Doubtless it'll all go pear-shaped though so I'll probably be back at some point with any number of tales of woe and begging for help again...  :-\
