Telephony accuracy in political cartoons
« on: November 19, 2019, 10:18:30 PM »

Hello all!  I am enjoying life in South Wales, have been busy with lots of things and my broadband is stable at a realistic speed given the distance involved.

Those who follow my blog will know I have been decorating my living room for 6 weeks now, and it's not finished yet.

I saw this political cartoon, and thought of the Kitz Forum.

I'm not posting for the politics - I take no sides (if any) in this particular post, though those who know me may know my politics better.

But for here, as a layperson, I was both delighted with the attention to detail but also the mistakes in this cartoon.

It may also be worth considering which mistakes are actually artistic decisions (eg the ladder reaching the top of the pole - it clearly looks better to illustrate the height and position if he is on a ladder)

Just thought I'd share and maybe you can pull it apart

Nos Da

Well... interesting that the flags are ‘fluttering’ in the breeze.   Would a flag in free fall really flutter?

My thinking is, a flag flutters because the wind is pulling it in various directions, balanced against the pole, fixed in place, trying to keep it stationary.   With the flag pole floating free, why would the flag flutter?

Hasten to say, this is not an attempt to change anybody’s political views. Neither is it a long held opinion, nor a deeply held belief.  I’d never thought of it til 5 mins ago. ::)

A flag would flutter in free fall (a flag flutters in a dead steady breeze from a constant direction)  but the the pole being heavy would be downwards with the flag fluttering behind.

Hmmm, not convinced.   We’ve all seen bits of litter get blown around in strong winds, and my own recollection is that loose paper objects, such as cheap carrier bags, tend to hold the same shape for quite long time whilst airborne.  :-\

That is because they are being carried with the wind, so the relative air speed to the object is zero.

Telephony accuracy? Looks to me like it's an electricity distribution pole, and Jeremy is turning on the power to "fry" Boris. Elementary error is that there's no return path, so Boris is safe - much like the birds that perch on open wires.

Yeah, I don't think 50v down a telephony wire would be of much harm.

In fairness, some poles carry both phone & electric, a few feet apart,  I've one such pole behind my garage. Though the one in the cartoon doesn't look like that.

More importantly now I am wondering where this shed is of Ian's. I'll not be far away, being in Wales myself.
