Its a tricky thing when it comes to IoT as it seems nomatter how rediculous an idea is, someone will actually be working on it.

When the term was first bandied about it pretty much did mean that. Lots of little devices all making their own Internet connections, with all the implications that had for coverage and address space and security. Nowadays it tends to mean devices sharing a local Internet connection, which is a very different thing.
