Author Topic: Broadband drops and with massive variation with the SNRM readings  (Read 2427 times)

Hi,

For the last 18 hours, I've noticed my BT connection drop twice on my FTTC line and after the first drop I've set up a Raspberry Pi to monitor the connection. After 7:23 am the downstream SNR jumped from around 6.8 to 9.1dB and it has now stayed at around 8.9 - 9.1 dB on downstream. Upstream has stayed more or less consistent at around 6dB until it dropped for a minute to 5.4dB and at the same time, the downstream dB dropped to 0.6dB.
I've called BT to see if they've detected an issue on their end and they said they've detected nothing wrong with the connection. I was wondering if there's something wrong on my end or is there something wrong on the BT's end.

Attached to the forum post is the SNRM readings from the Raspberry Pi.

The Modem is an unlocked Openreach Huawei HG612 attached to a TP-Link Archer C50 router.

The downwards spike in the SNRM occurred at around 1152 - 1153 hours.

Do you have anything in your local environment that would have either been switched on or switch off at that time?

Not that I'm aware of...

Hmm . . . I suspect you will have to carefully keep watch for other events to occur. I can see nothing to explain the one that you have documented.

I'm continually monitoring the DSL stats and today I've noticed another drop (only with downstream) that wasn't as large as the previous one that I posted about.
I'm not aware of anything in the local environment what would have caused it.

After another disconnection last night (this time at 2 am) I've called BT again and they're still saying that there's nothing wrong with the connection. Though a check on BT Wholesale showed that my IP Profile's maximum speed dropped from 29Mbps 4 days ago to 23Mbps.

My SNR margins are still above 9dB on download

Don't call them, use their forum. The mods there know how broadband works and what to do.

Wow is only me see g.inp on eci cabinet?  ;)
Is your modem on latest fw? If not maybe that is why you got such issues?  ::)

There are a few very select lines where ECI ginp is left enabled.  Openreach have done this to just wind up all the other ECI users (me included) to remind them everyone could have ginp/3db but for whatever reason they have decided to give up and not to roll it out again.

Assuming it isnt being misdetected I doubt very much ginp is causing the problem though.  In all likelihood it will doing what it is designed to do making the line far more stable and faster.

Well I didn't say it will, I said it may if modem don't have latest fw. It was mentioned on forum several times that modems which are not suitable for g.inp with g.inp activated will cause issues. So is worth to check/swap modem.

So the issue is being resolved, I've had an engineer pop over to check my line and it turns out that there was an issue with the equipment at the exchange. My SNR margins haven't returned back to normal yet but it's been a week since the engineer visit and I haven't had a drop yet.

I'm not sure if this modem firmware is up to date or not... The firmware version is in the DSL stats section of the original post, can you check for me?

Thanks in advance!
