ISIS
« on: October 21, 2019, 12:00:57 AM »

On more than one occasion, our expert in the field, Black Sheep, has mentioned checking for details in the "ISIS" facility available to Openreach staff. I recall that when I last made reference to "Useful ISIS documents . . ." we had a brief discussion on acronyms. Fuggi mentioned "Think in the deep and distant past ISIS was "Inland Services Information System"."

Recently I was reading some BT documentation from the early 1990s and came across ". . . details are available from the Inland Services Information System (ISIS) and should be consulted for all possible configurations . . .". So sixteen month later, I feel duty bound to send the usual prize of kitteh treats (unlicked) to Fuggi for providing the correct answer to the mystery.  :)

IS-IS is also a routing protocol typically found in core networks of major carriers, too.

Thank you. So now I am aware of Intermediate System to Intermediate System.

That’s right, IS-IS - just about the only surviving part of the great OSI network protocols’ definition project. Used by some corporates for internal very large network routing configuration.

I've never implemented it myself, though had to study it to pass one of the CCNP (Cisco) exams about 10 years ago. It's operation is not unlike OSPF, but the finer details escape me now.

Thank you burakkucat, the treats (unlicked) are much appreciated. It's good to know some of the
information retained over the years is not always useless.
