Incoming call “security questions”
« on: October 17, 2019, 06:10:10 PM »

A financial institution called me this afternoon, to continue a conversation I had started earlier.

They began by asking me to run through some security questions to confirm my identity.    I explained that, whilst I was happy to continue the conversation, since it was an incoming call I would refuse to answer any security questions.   The call then ended by mutual agreement.

Was I being unreasonable?

Totally reasonable, in my view. They should have asked you to call back, and then they could check your credentials. You could provide the information because you would know who you were calling.

That of course is what followed, with the customary music on hold while I waited in queue for several minutes, then spoke to the ‘colleague’ of the original gentleman, who had to fetch the notes and read up on them. ::)

I know you are joking, but that would be a far more sensible arrangement. :)

Some processes are moving that way.   There’s one online interface (is it ‘verified by Visa’?) that displays a popup containing a phrase of my own invention to confirm it is genuine, father than phishing.   Even so, whilst I’d probably recognise an incorrect phrase, a totally blank phrase would probably go unnoticed. :(
