Bridge mode on Zyxel 8324 questions?
« on: September 25, 2019, 01:51:37 PM »

I am considering using my Zyxel 8324 B10A in bridge mode (and getting a separate router) is there anything you should configure apart from changing  the drop selection to Bridge?  Do you need to / should you disable firewall, WiFi or any other options on the Zyxel or does the Zyxel configure it all for bridge automatically?

I use DSLstats is it possible to configure so I do not need multiple cables to keep stats in this mode?

Thanks

I think I just stuck mine in bridge mode and disabled wifi.  I don't think I did much more than that tbh, but I didn't give it a great deal of thought!

Disabling the firewall wouldn't change anything.

In bridge mode the device is simply a modem, so it would not be part of the traffic path, i.e. not an edge device between your network and the internet connectivity, if I've explained that correctly.

Thanks for replies.  I am sure I have read it is possible to get some  modems getting stats in bridge mode over one cable.  Does anyone have the same memory for the Zyxel?

I'd assume this can be done using VLAN Groups but I never tried it as I believe VLAN tags reduce the MTU and I'm already using modified firmware to allow 1500 over the PPP link.

I put my modems on separate sub-net (like on separate LAN's) using my router so I can access them from my network, basically followed these instructions.
I imagine most routers have the ability to do this, its a bit messy to set up but it works. I am not sure if it introduces potential security vulnerabilities, probably does. There are people on here who understand networks way better than me ...

The only thing stopping me buying a new router and giving this a go is the concern of not being able to get DslStats working.  From your experience even though the modem will be in bridge mode (set to 192,168.10.1/24) and if my new router gives out DHCP addresses on 192.168.20.0/24 I should be able to add a NAT/firewall (?) rule that should get me to the bridge mode modem stats even though it should be isolated from eg 192.168.20.40? Thanks

You could always add a second network card to your PC purely for stats, which is on the same range as the modem (default 192,168.1.1/24 no gateway or dns servers need setting).
Then you have two network cables into the zyxel, one for the router and one to the PC for stats.

If your router is going to be a pfsense box, you can add an OPT interface so you could just use one ethernet cable.
See: https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/interfaces/accessing-modem-from-inside-firewall.html

Thanks I think someone posted the same URL above.

I wasn't planning on using pfsense and a 2nd nic isn't really an option I will have to think and consider the risk of having spent money on a router and not being able to get it to work.  I am tempted by the challenge though

I've disabled pretty much everything that had an 'off' option ;D

Disabled ADSL Modulation completely (all 8 options), disabled wireless, disabled firewall (makes no difference), and disabled TR-069 and TR-064.

This is what I do:

Depends on the capabilities of your router.
