FTTC Infrastructure Query
« on: September 25, 2019, 12:06:37 AM »

[Moderator note: This topic has been created by splitting off from 8062282's "BT DLM advice needed.." thread.]

When we were first connected to FTTC, the cabinet pair were some distance away and our village got FTTC download speeds in single figures or the low teens.  In due course an All-in-One infill cabinet was installed at the entrance to the village and download speeds of 60+ are available to all.  I would be grateful if anyone can be bothered to spare the time and effort to explain how that single cabinet fits into the system as opposed to the cabinet pair.

The basic process would have been as follows --
  • The new AIO cabinet was stood over or close to where the current D-side cables enter the village.
  • An optical fibre would have been provided to link the AIO cabinet's DSLAM to the fibre head-end exchange.
  • All existing VDSL2 circuits were disconnected from the "far away" cabinet's DSLAM, reverting back to straight crimps between the D- & E-side cables.
  • The D-side cables were then intercepted and looped through the patch-field of the AIO cabinet.
  • The VDSL2 circuits were then re-provisioned from the DSLAM in the the AIO cabinet.
The process would have required co-ordination with all the ISPs and the actual adjustments to the jumpers would have involved the creation of temporary double jumpers, by means of usage of fancy three-way crimps.

Thanks for the clear and prompt explanation.

It actually took several months from the cabinet being powered up until existing customers were transferred because of the whole rigmarole around the agreement process with all of the affected ISPs.

Yes, it can be a long drawn-out process. You may also come across the phrase "live - live migration" used in the context of such a change-over.
