In the Millenium Exhibition there was an item about language; how babies' babbles were identical world wide, only developing later into a specific tongue with 'rules', or rather topsy grown customs, that all in a society accept.

And how different all those customs are: word order, inflexions of which some change the first letters some the last, tones, Name it; it's there. Yet somehow we communicate- a miracle, but not one to be tightly bound.

A look at Van Valin and La Polla’s late 1990s tome (about the ‘role and reference grammar’ approach to syntax-semantics linkage) gives you some idea of the huge variety in world languages. I have a George L Campbell’s concise and full two-volume ‘compendium of the world’s languages’ which gives a snippet about 100 and 300 languages respectively. That is a great reference though not without its faults, and marvellous for dipping into.
