Openreach ECI modem reliability
« on: September 09, 2019, 03:50:03 PM »

I know the Openreach modems were end of lifed a couple years back, but I've been using my ECI modems regardless. Recently though I've having trouble with one of them where the connection just shows as disconnected in my router (pfSense).

The ECI modem shows all lights as gree but the router shows the WAN connection as down and won't successfully reauthenticate until I power cycle the ECI modem.

Wondering if these Openreach modems have any kind of known hardware issue which sounds like the above? or if my ISP (Zen) is the one having issues.

I can't say that I have read any other reports similar to your own.

Have you tried swapping the two modems to see if the fault moves with the device or if it remains associated with circuit? (I'm assuming you have a pair of line-balanced or bonded circuits.)

Hi

I could be wrong but the issue sounds likely to be the power supply

The hg612 showed exactly the same and was found to be a faulty power supply.

Many thanks

Thanks for the replies.

The issue is pretty sporadic, once a month. But I have a spare boxed modem so will try swapping.

Is the best VDSL modem these days the DrayTek 130?

It really depends upon the "type" of "best" that you seek . . .

The DrayTek Vigor 130 is built as a modem and uses a Lantiq chip set.

The ZyXEL VMG1312-B10A is built as a modem/router and uses a Broadcom chip set. There are a number of members who use the latter just configured as a modem bridge and consider it to be the best performing device.
