Wake up with a bang
« on: June 25, 2008, 12:29:39 PM »

This morning at around 4am I was jolted awake by a very loud bang coming from the computer room..  Fearing the worse I half expected it to be one of the PCs..  but no....

On the floor next to my desk I had a "six pack" of coke cans (still in the cellophane wrapper) with 4 cans still in.
One of the cans had exploded showering coke up the wall and was now merrily leaking all over the carpet.

Ive included a pic showing the now washed out coke can - but aside from being rinsed out it is exactly how it was.  It almost looks like someone has ripped the can wide open.

Was a bit weird and certainly woke me up with a bang..
The only thing I think what had happened is that I'd had an old heat sync on the edge of the desk which must have fallen on the cans... this was now on the floor.  This must have initially pierced the can.. but pressure then caused it to explode and rip wide open.

>> there must have been a tiny puncture in one of the cans

Having now seen how thin the metal is on the side walls of a can and the pressure that must build up.. I'm actually quite surprised that it doesnt happen more often.
Im sure cans never used to be that thin? Must be an environmental thing to save the earth.... and shower us with coke :D

Seems to go everywhere doesnt it  :(

Same thing happened to a school friend, he was carrying a can in one hand and swinging his arm as you do when walking, part way back home and there was a loud pop and the can burst in a similar fashion in his hand.

He wasn't hurt at all, just very shocked and sticky, He stood there for at least 10 seconds in scilence with eyes on stalks, coke froth dripping from one hand, wet patch in the hip of his jeans and side of his tee shirt ans a split open can on the road by the pavement with some coke and foam.

It was quite serreal, took me a while to clock what had happened

I think what surprised me most was they way the can had ripped open....  but Im just thankful it wasnt the PC going bang.
Had enough PC probs over the past few weeks, and the sound (or at least in my dream state) seemed to sound very similar to a PSU blowing.

When we owned the village shop, we had split cans, cans that you would just catch on some edge and make a hole in the paper thin metal and it would spray all over the place.
Not only coke but pop and beer.
I took them back to the cash and carry and they would give me replacements.

What about claiming some compensation Kitz, 'Coke' would not want this getting in the news papers , TV, or the on internet would they. >:D
I think an email to there head office would be the way to go, Now there is the decorating , new carpet, new laptop, server computer what else.?, and a replacement can of coke.

sweets.  mythbusters have done quite a lot on coke and mentos ... apparently its the uneven surface of the sweet that causes such a big eruption.
