Virgin Media capacity testing
« on: June 23, 2019, 12:22:48 PM »

Hi all,

So our house move has been put back. Again. Can't really work on 4G until the new completion date so have taken advantage of a Virgin Media rolling contract.

I don't pay the bill so have elected to have both the 402.75 down, 22.1 up business service and the 402.75 down, 37.5 up residential service run together for 4 weeks.

I'll be using some software to load balance the two, and will see how the capacity holds up to having over 800Mb, over 50% of the capacity downstream, and nearly 60Mb, about 55% of capacity upstream, consumed by one device.

At peak times this will break things, no question. There's no way there will be that much capacity sitting idle. Off-peak should be more interesting and may produce tests around the 760-770 down, 57 up mark.

We'll see. Will advise.

I'm sure I won't be the only one interested to see what happens.  ;)

'Install' or, more accurately, me telling the person in the van to activate the modem and hand it over as I'm already set, Tuesday.

Give me a day or so to get the load balancing sorted, the hardware is only ickle so this'll be at the edge of its capabilities, and I'll be able to test. I'll use the DSLReports one as it's most accommodating to load balancing. Some Ookla ones are too to some extent also.

Have to love student status, by the way. No install fee, no 'flexi-fee' on the 350Mb rolling contract, getting it for 45GBP a month rather than 52 with no 70GBP in advance.

Consistently in the 700/50 - 740/55 range at the moment. Not bad.

Yes. The 657 was an outlier. Quite impressed.

Owners of shared networks would love the advanced security option I'm trying to get into the product. Won't go into it but it would be a nightmare for bandwidth consumption: bwahaha.
