PTR records
« on: June 05, 2019, 08:12:32 AM »

I have several A records that point to the same address and CNAMES that alias them, so there are quite a few domain names that refer to the same machine. What is best practice : should I arrange corresponding PTR records for all of them? So that one IP address will have several PTR records associated with it. Or will that be confusing?

Hi

I would only use 1 PTR

Whilst it is true you can have multiple PTR on the same IP address it is never advised to do so

This could cause issues with programs which check PTR (eg mail servers), and where multi PTR exist, it would randomly choose a PTR from the list. Therefore may not use correct PTR for the program checking PTR and fail

If your wanting to have multi PTR to make you appear more legitimate, the opposite becomes true

BTW, you have asked this many times sorry

Many thanks

John

Thanks to d2d4j and apologies for the repetition, there is of course a reason. :-(
