Openreach Tweak Minimum Allowed G.fast Speed to 120Mbps
« on: June 28, 2019, 05:09:05 PM »

In an interesting development Openreach (BT) has decided to change the “minimum selling rule” for their hybrid fibre G.fast broadband lines from 100Mbps to 120Mbps, which means that UK ISPs won’t be able to sell the service to customers unless their lines can achieve downloads of 120Mbps+.

According to the brief announcement, “The purpose of the change is to improve customer experience and create more certainty for CPs when selling lines at the edge of the network.” Previously the fault threshold for G.fast was set at 100Mbps, which also happens to be the start of Openreach’s definition for “ultrafast broadband” performance (plus it helps to maintain some separation with older FTTC / VDSL packages that max out at just under 80Mbps).

Of course, BT's Stay Fast Guarantee on their lowest tier of g.fast products is also 100MB!

Ironically, this might be good news for customers like us who are on a g.fast cabinet but too far to get it (even at the lower speed) - hopefully making the business case for FTTP etc. more feasible.

This is interesting news. I think the main problem with G.fast is the quality of copper lines its going down. At least now the people moving on to it will have a better chance of seeing a significant speed increase, especially if they were already getting the highest speed on FTTC at 80Mbps. I wonder if there was cases were someone on the highest speed on FTTC was getting either the same or lesser speeds when they moved to G.fast?

As for the overall state of G.fast this will reduce its availability, and is kind of an acknowledgement that its struggling to keep up with being priced along side FTTP packages. As anyone connected on G.fast at 330Mbps ?

I agree with your last line @gt94sss2 - hopefully this is a sign that FTTP is now taking an increasing priority over G.fast.

It is encouraging that it feels like someone in OR is thinking very pragmatically about the future. Along side this G.fast news, and also todays news that ECI cabinets are now on the cards to be replaced, it looks like OR are taking bigger strides with a view to the future.

Some people do get 330mbps but it wont be a huge number in terms of percentage. It is kind of like the old adsl2+ 24mbit product where it is an achievable maximum but not a realistic expectation for most people.
