The Times archive
« on: June 21, 2008, 09:55:37 AM »

You can now browse and search through 200 years of history (1785-1985) as recorded in The Times. See http://archive.timesonline.co.uk/tol/archive/

That's worth knowing - I love the times website.

I think it's going to be a great time waster... must have taken them ages to trawl the archives and get it all online tho.

The idea is great BUT it does not work too well - I have tested with Firefox v2, IE6, IE7 and except for a few well used pages the search works and gives links but then i just get a rotating sun.

I have emailed support and all they come back with is -
Thank you for your email and apologies for the problems that you have experienced.  When accessing the Times Archive, please be aware of the following:

Times Online works best with Internet Explorer 5 and 6 and Firefox 1 on Windows XP, Internet Explorer 6 on Windows 2000, and Firefox 1 and Safari 1 on Mac OS X.

Unfortunately we cannot guarantee the functionality of the Times Archive with any other browser or operating system.

You should make sure your cookies and Javascript are enabled in your browser.

 Unbelievable that they should only use old, out of date browsers and even the IE6 rarely works for me.  I reported the script failure and they ignore me just giving the above useless reply.

Thank goodness they are NOT charging yet.  It will have to improve before they start charging! :no: :no:

Welcome Jim, and I have to agree with you - that's a bit pathetic. As I'm using Firefox 2 on Linux I guess I don't stand a chance. :(

Edit:  I did a couple of successful searches, then when I clicked on a link it crashed back to the Times Online registration page.

Maybe it's just a bug in the way the page(s) have been written?

I have even sent them the error from Firefox and IE6 script debugs and they ignore it.

Some pages work, seems to be those frequently visited, such as 3 June 1953, but try an odd date and the failure comes almost every time.

 Error is -
obj is null

and the codes there is

   if (obj.offsetParent) {
      curleft = obj.offsetLeft
      curtop = obj.offsetTop
      while (obj = obj.offsetParent) {
         curleft += obj.offsetLeft
         curtop += obj.offsetTop
      }
   }
