Concerns are growing that many consumers, broadband ISPs and mobile operators in the United Kingdom could be impacted much more severely than first thought after the President of the USA, Donald J. Trump, signed an executive order to “prohibit transactions posing an unacceptable risk to the national security of the USA.”

I'm coming to this story a bit late but thought I'd ask, what does this mean for the Huawei cabinets? I know we talked about this in a previous thread and it was dismissed and said the ban will only focus on core areas. But with google banning huawei mobile phones from using its services it directly interacts with the consumers i.e. I was going to buy a huawei phone but now won't because of the imminent ban, even though they are good phones.

I guess this is another incentive to move away from cabinets to fttp, is there any alternatives to huawei when it comes to fibre networks?

It is a poor state of affairs when there are so few top rated technology companies when it comes to networks like this. Is there alternatives to huawei? Will the ill-fated ECI now fight back and gain more of a share of cabinets again? Does Nokia make cabinets or can they only do G.fast pods?

It means nothing for existing Huawei infrastructure.
It isn't considered core kit.

OpenReach will continue to deploy Huawei hardware.

It's not any incentive. The FTTP hardware is also Huawei, both ONT's in homes and OLT's in exchanges.

American companies are banned from working with Huawei.

OpenReach aren't, and Huawei remain their current supplier, along with Nokia.

At present it seems likely to be OK, however is it a good idea to allow a foreign company whose links to a state like China and somewhat muddy to say the least to be allowed to provide hardware which might in the future be compromised by these links to the Chinese government. Its not only the USA who object to Huawei but Canada, Australia and New Zealand. I think we should be safe rather than sorry after the event.

I could say the same about ECI telecoms and the Israeli government.

No idea why so much focus is on Huawei. They aren't the Chinese Government, they are a private company.

This is nothing but Trumps trade wars, and the executive order on Huawei will be removed when the trade war is sorted and he can announce victory to his followers.

Unless British companies start making this kit we're going to have to buy from foreign suppliers.

There has never been any proven links between the Chinese Gov and Huawei, unlike ZTE.

As stated above, this is simply the Americans saying jump and the rest of us asking how high.

Doubts about Huawei have been going on loooong before Trump came into power.
It is just receiving a lot more publicity since he has, and he has pumped it up to the point that the general public doesn't realise there is a difference between their Huawei phone.. and equipment used by the core network.   It's something that has been discussed on these forums for at least 5 yrs.

BT/Openreach began installing more ECI's after one of the waves about the Security of Huawei equipment and it was at about that time that they started replacing some of their core equipment with other manufacturers' (Alcatel).
From memory there was some new law passed about 10yrs ago that all Chinese citizens/companies would comply with calls by the Chinese gov to assist in espionage which first started ringing alarm bells..   but I suppose if at a time of war then any country could impose similar

BT conducted some research years ago and found 'something' they were unhappy about, but chose to work with Huawei in resolving these issues - again from memory but Huawei spent a few million correcting whatever it was that BT was unhappy about - I don't think much info was disclosed exactly what the 'something' was.
There was also another more detailed investigation this year undertaken by GCHQ.   A lot also depends upon what "real evidence" the CIA claims to have found of proof that Huawei was funded by China's Military and Intelligence.   The likes of you and me are hardly likely to know what the truth is.  :/
