IDE to SATA
« on: June 20, 2008, 09:10:23 PM »

I had Aqua Pearls that the Manager spent hours on but the computer that it was on went kaput. I salvaged the hard drive but if I install it as a slave on this PC I understand that the programs will not work. Must get round to trying it and see, but I need to get a converter from IDE to SATA.

Got a similar problem here

I want/need one of these
http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=676578

I did a run to Scan this week to get a pile of other stuff I needed but unfortunately they are out of stock and have been for about a week :/

The other alternative is these
http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=577057

The same thing is available much cheaper on ebay but Im not too sure about HongKong..  and aside from that due to the layout of the drives and space then the 1st type would be better for my own system.

nice find, i would go with the 2nd, since you could have it outside your case and connect your power and Sata cable out the back, so you can remove it quickly, if you want a permanent one got for the first if you have space in your PC =).

I heard they did an IDE to Sata , but the one my bro got sucked, never could get it too work, but they look pretty decent, wish i'd known about those ones now :P

Yeah I was originally going to go for the 2nd..  but Im a bit concerned about the layout of where my drives would be located and the fact that theres not that much space at the back of the drive when the case is closed.

Presently the drives are "sideways"  and theres not that much space at the end of the drive (It currently uses 90 degree SATA cables) to cut down on how much sticks out.  Therefore the addition of option 2 then the sata cables could make things pretty tight... hence me thinking option1 would perhaps be best.

If you have a PC where the HDDs are direct under the CD/DVD Roms then there shouldnt be a problem with option2.

I definitely wanted to install the drive internally although these neat gadget caught my eye for quick install of external drives

How neat is that that theres no messing with putting drives in a caddy - just plug it in and off you go.

very nice, good idea. Quick and easy, plus saves space in your case, which will improve airflow  ;D

Even simpler, Ebuyer stock a USB2 version that negates any need to mess about with internal connections.

I guess it depends on whether you want to use the drive permanently, or if it's simply for data retrieval purposes. The USB connection will be helluva slow by comparison, but it certainly sounds the most convenient.

Maplins are down by the airport near the sniffy shop.

I saw those..  but got put off because they stick out even more than the sideways ones which wouldnt be any good on my own system and I thought the price was rather expensive at maplins.

I dunno if you know but ebuyer has the same sort but made by Plexus for only £4.99, which is a heck of a saving over £22.99

..  and I also noticed they do the "sideways ones" too

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/139071

which is what I may get if Scan dont get any more of the PCI card type in soon

PS..

Dunno if you can see, but this is the reason why I cant get one that sticks out too far...  else I wont be able to get the side of the case on.

Yes, my main machine is like that. It makes access to the hard disk much easier, but also as you say, it limits the space for connectors and cables.

I didn't say earlier..  but I already have a removable SATA drive in a docking bay which is basically a mirror*

As well as the SATA docking bay, the PC also has a front SATA connector port.

However with the "loss" of 2 machines in the same week, it means that I have a few spare IDE drives..  I'd like to use the 250GB one and install it permanently inside the new machine...  but everything on the mobo is either SATA or eSATA.

*Bit long winded to describe the whole backup stuff.  I was at one point thinking RAID but after much thought I have another process which involves a combination of Ghost, Robocopy and Replicator and a  networked LinkStation..  together with the removable drive means that I have something more suitable to my requirements and hopefully more robust that what RAID alone could do.
