G.Fast via Zen Internet
« on: May 08, 2019, 05:57:46 PM »

re0 you said Also, as I mentioned in a post of mine in a different thread, go with 160/30 first then see what the engineer's JDSU says. You can upgrade to 330/50 later with only a new contract, but downgrading counts as early termination.

Good advise but am I allow to ask openreach engineer come to my house to test the line to see what JDSU say if it was higher speed, then can order 330/50 with Zen?

Unless the ISP supplies CPE that has a G.fast modem and the premises shows the status as "Available" as opposed to "Amber" (typically because of old NTE Faceplate AFAIK) then you will need an engineer visit.

Zen does not supply a device with a G.fast modem at moment, so you will have an engineer visit to supply an Openreach modem (Huawei MT992). Given the nature of the install type, the engineer will hook up the JDSU to the line and he should be able to tell you the stats for your line if you ask.

If it is possible to attain higher, then it is up to you if it is worth paying extra for 330/50.

Maybe a brand new second line could be much better than my fttc line in the hallway. Just want a second new line to be installed in the computer room. But I don't know how much do zen Internet charged for a new line?

I thought you just ordered from Virgin?

You could ask the engineer to tell you the lines max attainable. There's no obligation on them to do this though.

This would only be possible if you actually ordered the 160/30 G.Fast service and the engineer had physically enabled the service.
You would still need to keep G.Fast whatever the JDSU showed the line as being capable of.
If the result showed a high enough estimate for you to upgrade to the higher speed G.Fast service then you could place an order to upgrade the line.

My advice would be to save your money and keep your 80/20 FTTC.
It's more than capable to meeting your requirements.

You could even consider downgrading to 40/10 if it would save you any money.
There's no need to have such high broadband speeds for your particular needs and usage.
You're putting too much effort and emphasis on getting the fastest service available without any real purpose.

@jOhn

Ok fair enough. I was bit worrying too much over someone could order on g.fast could end up lower affect on my FTTC 80/20 like heavily crosstalk from g.fast users.

Ok I will stay with FTTC and save my money. And better watch champions league football tonight. I am in shell shocked over last night with Liverpool 4-0 win.  :o

G.fast doesn't crosstalk with FTTC/VDSL.

I was writing a reply but see there have been two since I started. So, I just deleted it all. :D

Yes, the sensible choice is to stay on FTTC if you don't need anything more.

Just try and chill out a bit otherwise I imagine topics are going to start getting locked quickly if the posts deteriorate.
