I too once synced at 80Mbps, but nowadays, I'm getting roughly 69/65Mb on each of my 2 lines.

At ~135Mb actual throughput, I really can't complain. I'm paying a lot for it as I have two lines, but, I can easily afford it, so no problem.

But u are paying twice more than the monthly cost from g.fast 160/30 product

No direct reply from OR yet?

Got email back from openreach

Code: [Select]
The GFAST pod connected to your cabinet pcp 8 will be going live this week,
we are aiming to be able to take orders before the weekend.
If we do experience any unforeseen delays I will let you know,
however everything looks to be in place for the new pod to be commissioned
and GFAST services made available.

Code: [Select]
We will make the service available to all CP’s this week (subject to everything going to plan)
They in turn may have some delay in making this available for re-sale.

Having checked the online speed checker I get the following estimated speeds.
(For VDSL or G.fast Ranges A and B, the term "Clean" relates to a line which is free from any wiring issues
(e.g. Bridge Taps) and/or Copper line conditions,
and the term "Impacted" relates to a line which may have wiring issues
(e.g. Bridge Taps) and/or Copper line conditions.)

I will monitor progress this week and let you know when we are ready to take orders

He also give me the g.fast range A as it look rather disappointed - very low for my cabinet to be 250m away with 211/29 or 151/18 :(

I have decided to stay with FTTC. Not worth to pay extra monthly fee £52.00 for g.fast from Zen Internet as I probably have to go with Virgin Media standalone 350/35 when my PN contract expires in this October.

Observed Speeds       G.Fast    VDSL
RangeA Base Upstream Bandwidth (Mbps)       10.3    18 (see this - upstream are lots worsen than VDSL at 18 but GFAST get only 10)

Very good. About 18 months and counting faster than here.

Only downside: no motivation to deploy FTTP to you - you can easily get >100Mb so are passed by Openreach ultrafast now.

Bad news is Openreach has just email me say there is no plan to have FTTP for Cuckoo Oak at this current stage but this may change in the future as openreach are look to improvement in speed related.

Zero point for a while. G.fast only exchange as many are for now. Even when they do an FTTP build it'll start with areas where G.fast isn't available due to cabinet not being enabled or distance.

Will be done eventually but certainly closer to 2025 than 2019 I would think.

For the distance, seems about on the money. At least the estimates are not enthusiastic.

Your line seems relatively clean from the stats you posted, so there is a reasonable chance of obtaining towards the top end.

Probably a good choice.

re0

I work out in maths as g.fast seem isn't worth it for on the line stats below

G.fast Range A (Clean) High 211.5 Low 29.6 Handback 152.4
Actally on the line (activated) High 138.39 Low 22.69 Around 14.01 more than Handback so I would gained 58.4Mbps downstream more than VDSL and 2.7Mbps upstream more than VDSL.

So Virgin Media 350/35 are a better choice overall. Yup.

Those can't be clean figures for your activated line? Seem too low. Wasn't very clear from your reply, so presumably impacted estimates?

There are cheaper options for 160/30 than Zen offers (from EE, CIX, IDNET), but I really do understand the concern for upstream. People who can just about get "ultrafast" downstream from G.fast will be face the possibility of worse upstream than VDSL. :(

Hopefully Virgin performance will be adequate in your area.

I did consider draytek but I do value the broadcom monitoring, and could never find a cheap draytek unit, at same price level as zyxel stuff.

which model you recommend for a modem only configuration?

I took a decision some years ago to split wifi functionality away from routing tasks, so I use a Vigor 2760 non wifi model as a modem/router, although it can be used in modem only mode. I would have thought that 2760s could be found quite reasonably now as they have been replaced by the 2762 series. Draytek's only current modem is the Vigor 130, which I believe to be the same hardware as the 2760 minus the routing capability and fewer lan ports. I have a Pi running which is collecting stats hourly from the Draytek, but I don't have any graphing capability at the moment.

I ended up ordered VM ViVID350 with phone line as VM online will applied £50 credit for me. They say to me there is no network issues in my area and will get 362 Mbps down and 37 Mbps up.

Installed date this Friday.

Will cancel Plusnet next week. So, no more FTTC for me. Hope I made the right choice.

CarlT

;D and no need to worry about FTTC (DLM) anymore on Cable broadband and stick up finger on Openreach for poor G.fast.
