ZyXEL VMG 1312-B10A modem-only - admin i/f via IPv6 ?
« on: April 21, 2019, 10:57:23 AM »

I have four ZyXEL VMG 1312-B10As configured in modem-only mode, router and wireless functions disabled. I have not got the admin interfaces’ configuration regarding IPv4 set up properly, because each has an admin interface IPv4 address - of 192.168.n.1 - and knows it lives in a /24, but it does not have a default gateway set up.

My question: Does IPv6 work with the admin i/f - or can it be made to work - in modem-only mode?

A good question. I have not seen any evidence that IPv6 can be used . . . neither CLI nor GUI.

Using the IPv6 address shown in the LAN information section of the router's status page I can access my VMG1312-B10D.

In Firefox I entered http://[2001:8b0:xxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx] in the address bar.

Edit: Telnet works was well.

So jelv gives me hope. How is your B10D configured?

on my zyxel I know I cannot manually configure an ipv6 for my bridge subnet.

So I would assume it would need to be running as a router or getting an ip from a LAN DHCP server that allocated ipv6.

Ah, there’s no command to do it?

I wonder if it does the right thing in response to receiving an RA ?

its probable you can do it via cli given its linux assuming the service listens on all ip's.

So add ip and subnet to interface, but it wouldnt stick over a reboot and probably also over a network config change via UI either.

I think its probably better if you just setup your firewall to route the lan traffic to the subnet, my zyxel also has its own subnet but I access it from my normal LAN subnet over the cable used for WAN.

@chrys - indeed, that’s what I was expecting. If I knew the correct Linux runes then they would not be persistent.

Perhaps digging around in the config file xml might give some inspiration for testing which elements can accept IPv6 addresses.

I just suddenly wondered if IPv6 would ‘just work’ requiring merely RAs.
