DSLstats 6.5 with cisco hardware?
« on: April 02, 2019, 09:19:21 PM »

I'm trying to get dsl stats to grab info from my cisco ISR with a VA-DSL-A modem card. Not sure if I'm missing something, but I haven't been able to get anything yet, accept custom commands showing in the log.

Below, you can see what my output looks like... any ideas? Is my line any good?  :) hoping for some of that sweet SWEET vdsl2, or atleast adsl2+ soon.

Also, is there a reason I don't see more people here with cisco hardware? I have been very pleased with this card, zero errors on my line now! Of course the shielded/grounded cat5e coming straight from the outdoor splitter/NID to the modem doesn't hurt... there's something to be said about properly terminating your shielded cable and plugging directly into the modem instead of stacking more connectors from a wall plug ;D

I'm sorry, but I know absolutely nothing about the equipment you mention. It doesn't appear to have a Broadcom DSL chipset, in which case it wouldn't be possible to make DSLstats work with it.

Chip Vendor ID:      'BDCM'

looks like broadcom to me... I happen to know that the modem contains a broadcom bmips4350 chip. Doesn't DSLstats pull the info directly from the console anyway? is there a way I can specify which line each parameter appears on?

Code: [Select]
XTU-R (DS) XTU-C (US)
This ^ could be slightly confusing as XTU-R is remote (modem)  XTU-C is central office (dslam).
The (DS) & (US) is reverse of what we would usually expect to see.

The  EHWIC-VA-DSL-A is "based on the Broadcom chipset" although it doesn't say which particular one.
I suspect it's using Cisco custom f/w in a similar way to what TP-link does, so that the standard BCM commands may not be available...  thus limited information what you can get using DSLstats.

Our posts crossed.   I was typing my reply as you posted yours.

DSLstats uses the standard BCM CLI commands to get information.
However, some manufacturers make their own custom f/w with their own custom commands.   TP-link do this with all/most of their modems, which unfortunately stops DLSstats from being able to get all the data it needs :(

ahh, thanks for clearing that up  :D

I am using ADSLmonitor and am able to grab stats from any command by specifying line number... its a shame I can't do the same with DSLstats... hopefully next release I can, I don't really care about setting transmit power or anything as I can do that manually.

Here's a snip of the modem card console log:

Interesting pictures (and maps) will always attract the attention of a curious kitteh!  :D

I have to ask the two questions: Am I right to say that you are not located in the UK? And, if you won't mind disclosing the information, who is your service provider, please?

From the Cisco CLI via the console, are you able to drop back to an underlying (Busybox) shell? If yes, take a look to see if there is a command like "xdslcmd",  "xdslctl" or similar available.

Nope not in the UK, I'm across the pond  ;D and the provider (for everyone who isn't a moderator here and already looked it up) is Frontier. lol I'm not scared...

maps? ???

As for the avaliable commands... There's no access to to the modem console that I know of, except for a few things in the cisco config. in my first post you can see the output for 'sh controller vdsl 0/0/0' which should provide all the info needed for the graphing in  DSLstats

Next time I power the system off for something, Ill pull out the modem and check for a serial header, although I doubt cisco left me any

It's true that the output of the command which you showed in your first post seems to provide enough information for some useful graphs. However this would require a substantial rewrite of the parsing code in DSLstats, and I'm sorry to tell you that this isn't going to be possible. The time I spend in front of a screen is very limited by an eyesight difficulty, so I can't undertake anything more than minor tweaking.

aww too bad! I think ADSL monitor only goes up to 1,104khz and doesn't have the nice graphing or http server, not to mention the linux support...

On the up side, it sounds like I'm getting bumped up to ADSL2+ soon how much bandwidth do you all think I can expect with my stats? Are there any disadvantage besides loosing a couple mbps on the down side if I can convince the company to put me on annex M?

I'd wait and see what you get on ADSL2+ before considering Annex M.

Any chance you could get me the complete modem status layout that works? I could probably filter the output and make it work that way.

I've truncated some of the lists where it goes up to the tones in use as it bust the maximum message size on here.

Re: DSLstats 6.5 with cisco hardware?
« Reply #13 on: April 05, 2019, 12:21:17 PM »

Well... a little FYI to noobs like me who are using this hardware in the future... the following command allows direct console access to the card!

Code: [Select]
test vdsl 0/0/0 modem exec
I feel kinda dumb now....  :D atleast I found it though, right? I knew there had to be a way, but cisco doesn't make these types of things easy to google... NOT AT ALL!

I'm not even sure if cisco wants me posting this publicly as hard as it was to find lol, but jezus... I thought this was a cut down version, guess not!

Code: [Select]
The output of the command is :
adsl
adslctl
ash
bash
bcm_boot_launcher
bftpd
bpm
bpmctl
brctl
busybox
cat
chmod
consoled
cp
date
df

And the most important question: Did you get DSLstats running?
