FTTC DSLAM
« on: March 20, 2019, 01:55:59 PM »

Finally for the first time since 2014. Openreach engineer accepted and let me take a photo of the dslam of the fibre cabinet (pcp 8) as I asked what he was doing as he just connected new line card for the customer. Also I asked him when will g.fast become available, he say around in this July for my g.fast to go live.

Thanks OR for taking my time of this photo.

I feel I should correct a few facts.
  • An Openreach technician (or engineer, it you wish) does not have access to the cabinet equipped with the electronics (i.e. the DSLAM). It would have been a member of the BT Operate division or a contractor working on BT Operate's behalf.
  • A new line card is not installed for an end-user (i.e. you or me). A line-card has either been swapped out (perhaps due to defective ports) or a new line card has been added to the system, to provide further ports (i.e. a system upgrade). However the statement "he just connected new line card for the customer" could well be correct as the "customer" would be Openreach (i.e. Openreach is the "customer" of BT Operate).
What we see in the above image is a Huawei SmartAX MA5603T MSAN, with all six line card slots fully occupied.

Pretty sure it's well over 1000 ES a day before DLM will make any action.
I would leave it alone. Probably nothing you can do about it either if it's from another customer being added.

How many line card slots are there in the cabinet? there are 24 x 10 = 240 connected mean 48 more connected left before it all full up?

As the post you quoted says there are six line card slots, each with 48 ports on a cabinet that hasn't had the HD extension.

The other 5 cards are probably not full. Openreach try and add capacity before cards are full. If they were full the availability checker would have reflected this and rejected orders until that sixth card was commissioned.

If the sixth card gets close to being full that'll trigger an HD upgrade on the cabinet taking it to a capacity of at least 384 lines via 6 × 64 port cards.

Incidentally this has minimal, if any, impact on your service. By the time you're getting to 240 connections on the cabinet cross-talk is about as high as it's going to get.

Didn't see much, if any, change began 192 connections here and 600.

Note cabling exists on dummy plates for line cards 4-6 and only half of the ports shown on the right of the picture have filters.

Yep, didn't look very closely. 4-6 are indeed blank.

That third card was for connections 97-144.

Not that surprising. It's a pretty nondescript cabinet in terms of premises passed, less than 350, and has VM coverage.

Pretty slow take up actually. Either VM have the area very much wrapped up or people are content with ADSL. G.fast definitely the right choice, little indication that FTTP would be viable.

First thing I would have done after seeing the SNR & FEC spiking like that is power down the modem and let the port 'rest' for a while.

It's quite well documented on here that it is not unusual for the line to start spiking after it comes back up again after either a remote power down or power outage or power spike.   It's not just limited to FTTC - happens on adsl MSANs too.

;D been told by openreach via this chat https://www.homeandbusiness.openreach.co.uk/chat-with-us that g.fast will go live in July 2019 but they say my property address will not be getting any g.fast because of over 300m away from the cabinet as g.fast are not available to my address. I ask them what next if there is no g.fast for my property? and they say it will rolling out full fibre FTTP by 2033. Meaning I have to wait for next 14 years for that to happen. Remain on FTTC.

I think what they meant was everyone to be on full fibre by 2033. You may get it sooner.

I can now see cabinet 8 and 18 are fitted with G.fast pod and cabinet 6 & 9 are the next one to be added on soon.

It's appear Openreach are popping up everywhere in my area for cabinet 6, 7, 8, 9 and 18.

Engineer are working at the g.fast cabinet yesterday for almost 3 hours back and forward.

Today a new cabinet 9 for g.fast is installed.
