Amazon “pre delivery” phone call

(1/1)

sevenlayermuddle:
Anybody else had this?.

One morning last week, as I crawled out of bed, the phone started ringing.   It was an 0207 number that I’d never heard of.   Depending on mood I might have ignored it but bracing myself for an internet support scammer, I answered...

“hello?”
“Hi, is that <my address>?”
“Yes...”
“OK, I have a delivery for you, just making sure you’re home, see you soon.”

About 10 minutes later, an Amazon delivery man was at the door.   I asked what he’d have done if I’d not answered the phone?   Seems he’d have aborted the delivery, and tried to find an alternative such as leave it with a neighbour or (I assume) return it as undeliverable. :o

This seems pretty bad to me, I don’t often fail to answer the doorbell, but I often miss phone calls, either accidentally or on purpose.    ???

The package was nothing special, just a couple of cheap books and assorted stuff other half had ordered, with standard free delivery.   I have searched for the 0207 (In full) number and it is indeed used by Amazon delivery.

burakkucat:
No, I have not experienced that.

4candles:
I use Amazon fairly regularly, and I've only ever had email updates re delivery times.

sevenlayermuddle:
Both myself and better half have used Amazon for at least twenty years, and this was a first.

One difference I notice is, on my account our home phone is truncated, missing the last couple of digits.   I have no specific recollection of doing so, but that is a tactic I often employ when a phone number is demanded, and I don’t want to disclose the real one.

But this package was ordered on better half’s account.  Better half’s Amazon account has our number in full, but she is adamant that it has always been so, yet this is a new experience. :-\

roseway:
Perhaps this was just one Amazon delivery guy trying unofficially to avoid wasting his time.
