the comcast netflix relationship
« on: February 10, 2019, 10:39:31 AM »

I think I first started noticing netflix no longer been able to saturate my line about 3 months ago unless (very) off peak.

Today its down to 25mbit/sec when buffering a start of stream.

Its noticeably getting worse with every passing month.  Other uses are still able to max out the line single threaded.

I think if I googled it right comcast completed the buy out in october last year.

I wonder if we seeing a repeat of what they did in america?

Since netflix block pretty much every datacentre IP range now, I cannot reroute the traffic over a vpn/proxy to see if it gets the old performance back, I am locked to only using the sky netflix servers.

Is this an issue? The highest quality netflix streams I have encountered are around 10mbps.

I guess its a problem if several are trying to stream at once if the limit is to all traffic from them... is that the case?

right now no issue no, its higher than the bandwidth required for smooth playback.

I'd be very vey surprised if Sky Broadband were to start throttling Netflix or any other legal streaming service.

The fact they are now owned by Comcast doesn't change that.
It's a different regulatory environment here and Net neutrality has a bit more meaning.

Try one of the working smartdns services, which (unlike a VPN) do NOT affect your speed. Netflix have clamped down on many smartdns services hence why people have turned to traditional VPNs. However I've been using Oz based Vipdnsclub for the last few years to watch Netflix USA in UK and its working like a dream.

After reading up on vodafone issues, and people posting their netflix samknows data on there, I checked my samknows netflix isp data and it was actually all the way back in march 2018 was a sudden drop off.

Also the netflix quality test, has been since dec 2018 dropping down to HD from UHD which is interesting.

I did a support ticket about the failed the last kingdom episode, and it didnt really go anywhere other then them telling me to reboot router etc but that episode is working fine now.

Even the slowest result on that Samknows test is faster than any Netflix UHD stream.

Is the Sam knows tests single thread or multi thread?

it will be single threaded given thats how netflix works.

I assume they probably do a speedtest using netflix CDN servers (same as fast.com) and the result is then used to provide a rating for the quality of stream.  I can email them for clarification I guess. Bear in mind that graph is daily averages, meaning the lowest result for that day will be lower than the data on the graph, I couldnt do a 6 month graph with hourly plots.

Also the daily averages are lower then those plots as well since dec 2018.  They not on there as I wanted to post a graph showing the marked difference in march.  The slight drop off prior to march I think was due to sync speed change as I think that was around the time I lost my 80mbit sync down to 74mbit.

9pm on a sunday netflix is playing at 480p

Average throughput 7mbps peak burst 17mbps but only briefly.

Time to find a new isp.

Can see the clear jump when i manage to force the CDN server to switch.
