I'd be a bit careful about clearing ROM-D as I suspect the supervisor password will get randomised when you load the new firmware if you do that.
I'm not 100% on that one, but be warned that it might happen (and if you load V28 you won't be able to get it back without downgrading again).

I'd follow your advise, it's exactly what I would do.
