Is this Twisted Pair? advice on long runs of ethernet
« on: January 18, 2019, 04:42:37 PM »

I have received my Mk3 VDSL Filtered Faceplate, as I went to install it I thought I would check to see if the 26a surge arrestor was on the NTE5 (unsure as it wasnt marked '26a' like last time) and I noticed the wiring looks like it may NOT be CW1308 Twisted Pair.. can anyone confirm this from the photo below?

I have about 10-15 meters of it and have been previously thinking about moving the NTE5 into the kitchen and running a circa 15M Ethernet cable to the PC in the living room, this would remove easily 15M of this possibly 'untwisted' cable.

I have got slightly lower sync with the mk3 VDSL filtered faceplate @ 79,000k (79,999k previously on a dongle filter)

thanks in advance

It's hard to be 100%, but all CW1308 I've seen has pairs of two-colour wires (eg blue/white and white/blue).
Yours all appear to be solid colours which is probably what is often referred to as 'alarm cable' and is not twisted pair.

I see a CW1308 specification cable with two twisted pairs. The blue and orange wires are pair number one, the brown and green wires are pair number two.

When the external white sheath was stripped off, someone decided to untwist both pairs. Overall it looks to be a rather scrappy installation . . . possibly by a sub-contractor who did not know any better.

I have noticed since installing it that my bit-swapping seems to be more active and even doing some swaps on the upstream which I have never ever experienced before - I may remove it completely and go back to the dongle, I may even try a Mk4 just for an apples-to-apples comparison as they are cheap enough at 5 ish.. I paid a whopping 22 for the Mk3..!!

...

So there is - well every day is a school day! ;)
Also, now I think about it, 'alarm cable' is stranded rather than solid conductors.

i did peel back what I could (about 1 inch) and it does not appear to be twisted to me,  I will have to remove the back box and peel as much as i can back to double-check it

Looks like twisted pair to me, that's simply the old colour codes.
