Modem Advice

Hi everyone,

I currently have a Bt Home Hub 5A but want to upgrade the current network inferstructure in the home. I want to bridge a modem to a router. I have done some research and found that the cabinet that I am connect to is Huawei.

I’ve seen people recommend the draytek 130 but that uses the Lantiq chip which is better for ECI cabinets.

Also I’ve seen people highly recommend the HG612 3b and the Zyxel vmg8924-b10a.

I was wondering what other people thought would be best and if there is any alternatives.

The Zyxel vmg8924-b10a is almost identical to the Zyxel vmg8324-b10a.
The only difference is the 8924 has 5GHz AC WiFi, which is a waste in bridge mode.
So you may get the 8324 cheaper with the same performance in bridge mode.

I use the Zyxel vmg1312-b10A (not the vmg1312-b10D) and i coujldn't recommend it highly enough.

Any device with a BCM63168 or a BCM63138 will do.

Those are the best 2 performing Broadcom chipsets. The BCM63138 is much newer but not in as many devices yet.

I use the ZyXEL VMG 1312-B10A, not -D which is inferior, according to the consensus. I use this device in modem-only mode as you are proposing to do.

The 8- series ZyXEL models might be easier to get hold of than the VMG 1312-B10A and possibly cheaper too because the VMG1312-B10A is not being made any more. I’m not exactly sure, but I think summer 2017 might have been when ZyXEL ceased offering that model. Those alternative top end models might be less hassle.

VMG1312-B10A devices can be found on eBay but sometimes the prices are silly, sometimes not. Very occasionally, new ones could still be seen on eBay, within recent months.

I very much recommend the custom firmware that our member Johnson has built for all the various ZyXEL models. Amongst other enhancements, this firmware gives you full 1508 byte PPP MTU when in modem-only 'bridge' mode, provided that your router and service provider can handle 1508 byte long PPP packets. Without it you have to live with 1492 byte MTU.

Thank you both, I went with the vmg1312-B10A and got it all hooked up with the router switch and ap  ;)
