First day with new Billion 8800NL R2
« on: January 08, 2019, 09:01:35 AM »

In short; not very good! Since 5.15 last evening, it has re-syncd twice, errors are awful ( CRC 14600; ES 3000; SES 170 per hour),and DLM has hit.

I have a vague recollection that someone here had similar problems, but I may be wrong.
Thoughts anybody?

As already advised on another thread, the R2 has the budget chipset the BCM63381.
The 3rd digit in bold confirming it's a budget chipset.

With ES/SES like that I advise removing the device immediately before DLM hits the line any harder than it is already going to.

I'm not surprised.

I'd rather use a p00 ISP modem with no stats that worked, than a bit junk I can monitor as is sabotages my line.

Return to sender.

edit: p00 wasn't my choice of words, but the forums filter. p00 works.

Return to sender.

Can he?

It's working to it's specification. Isn't it the buyers fault for not adequately researching if it was suitable for his requirements?

For an online purchase from a UK retailer you can. I changed my mind is a good enough reason.

He didn't go with a Zyxel because he didn't want to use eBay so I'm guessing it's from a retailer.

3000 ES on the 1st day, maybe less than 24 hours ... I would be keen to see exact error figures with timings.

It's working to it's specification. ....

Is it? That sounds like it's faulty to me. There's no way it should be clocking-up so many errors on a line that is known to work with other modems.
As already suggested I'd pull that from the line now as DLM will take action with those error rates.

I found the old  thread and installed the update suggested there. In my case it seems (understatement) not to have worked.

From the old thread it appeared the reboot problem had been solved, but those with better recall may have known better. Some comments seem harsh, but as to returning it, I bought it from Amazon for its 30 return policy.

Two strange things;
1. The firmware description above is in no way similar to what Billion name the update. :-\
2. When setting up, in the section for ISP ID and p/word was MYNAME PN RTR. How could that have got there on a new router? :-\ :-\

Sorry to hear the router F/W update did not work for you, I was the party involved, it certainly worked for me and is still in service on my daughters rather long and quite heavily conjested PN VDSL2 line, has never self re-booted since.

In my case, I could positively state that the router was randomly re-booting and not being DLM re-synch'ed as the line was 24/7 monitored and recorded with DSLStats via a RPi, your issue appears to be more current line error status related and with this particular router, however, as the earlier router F/W was proven (in my case) to be an issue and Billion issued the revision specifically mentioning the random re-booting problem was certainly prudent to update as process of elimination if nothing else.

As j0hn has already mentioned, the Billion 8800NL R2 does incorporate the Broadcom budget chipset, however I have found it adequate for my particular application and the unit has given reliable service (apart from the now resolved F/W issue) for close to 2 years, considering the unit was bought S/H from the members swap forum can't complain.

Every line is unique after all, good luck with resolution.

Im back with PN Hub 1 now and straightway the connection is much healthier: Connection 21405/5443; SNR 4.2/6 down/up.

. . . straightway the connection is much healthier: Connection 21405/5443; SNR 4.2/6 down/up.

That is the only confirmation required -- an 8800NL R2 disagrees with your particular line/circuit.

Funny how a chipset change has such an effect, v1 was lovely. Does factory reset reverse firmware updates?
Anyone know what VDSL routers have Broadcom innards? Is list in DSL stats config u.t.d

No, it just removes all configuration options that have been set.

While I'm not a fan of the chipset, or shouldn't be that bad.

3780 ES in 2 hours 30 minutes is excessive to say the least and makes me think the device is faulty.

This is with Retransmission High (G.INP) on the line.
***There should be nearer 0 ES with the lines previous history (edited to avoid confusion, bad choice of words on my part.

The telnet stats you provided on your last set of stats are the best type to post as they show everything including error timers.
