Modem replacement
« on: January 06, 2019, 06:25:05 PM »

I'm currently using a Huawei HG612 on BT Infinity connected to Google wifi. I also have a Zyxel VMG8924-B10A that I have never used.

Is it worth swapping out the Huawei for the Zyxel? Would I see any benefit from swapping?

What speeds (line rate and max attainable) is your HG612 reporting at the moment?

The general opinion seems to be that you can get a slightly higher sync with the Zyxel, but if (like me), you're already getting the maximum 80/20 out of your line with the HG612, there's no reason to replace it.

You'll also need to replace the firmware on the Zyxel if you want to continue with a 1500 MTU.

Run a BT speed test. When it completes run the Fursther Diagnsotics. The sync speed can be determined from the IP Profile that reports.

Have now run the test, doesn't look like it's worth switching based on the results.

I'd guess it would add 2-3Mb downstream over the HG612 but often syncs up to 1Mb lower on the upstream.

You seem to be hitting the 10Mb upstream limit but not the 55Mb downstream limit.

It would be ideal for you.
